Reddish-brown to yellow shade colorants suitable for ribbon and ball point inks are produced from the glassy waste by-product of pararosaniline manufacture by slurrying the residue in mineral acid, diazotizing, and coupling. the resulting colorants are useful in preparing inks.

An improved process for the preparation of 3-chloro-2,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid is described which involves reaction of a diester of 3,4,5,6-tetrafluoro-1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid with a substituted amine to afford 3-amino-2,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid followed by subsequent conversion of the amio intermediate into 3-chloro-2,4,5-trifluorobenzoic acid.

This invention relates to a process for the separation of a nitrated substance from a spent nitrating acid wherein said nitrated substance contains polar groups selected from the group consisting of --SO.sub.3 H, --OH, --SH --CO.sub.2 H, --OSO.sub.3 H, and --OP(OH).sub.2 and their salts. This is achieved by:(1) diluting the nitrated substance-spent acid solution with water,(2) adding a monohydric alcohol or ketone extraction agent which is immiscible with the spent acid,(3) permitting the mixture to separate into layers of different densities one of said layers comprising said nitrated substance dissolved in said extracting agent,(4) removing said nitrated substance-extracting agent layer,(5) separating the nitrated substance from the extracting agent layer, and(6) reducing the nitrated substance to an amine.

Pigmentary Opal Sulfate is made by combining triphenylpararosaniline (Opal Blue) with a dilute acid. The pigmentary Opal Sulfate is a substitute for Alkali Blue. The most preferred process for producing the pigmentary Opal Sulfate involves drowning a solution of Opal Blue in a highly agitated solution of dilute sulfuric acid.

Substantially pure triarylmethane dyestuff salts free of contamination by arylamines are prepared by isolating in relatively pure form, the carbinol base corresponding to the dyestuff followed by salt formation by reaction with the appropriate acid. The resulting colorants are highly suitable for ball-point pen, printing, and ribbon inks.
