The dynamic reef includes anchoring means for anchoring the reef in a substantially fixed position with respect to a shoreline, an elastic rubber tubing secured to the anchoring means, and at least one flotation collar positioned so as to be rotatable about the rubber tubing for the purpose of dissipating wave energy. A solar strobe unit may be positioned on the rubber tubing at the end opposite the anchoring means and functions as a warning device. A method for preventing shoreline erosion and a system for reducing the effects of waves on a shoreline are also provided in accordance with the invention.

摘要： A dynamic shoreline erosion control system includes a plurality of large rotatable hollow spheres spaced along a line at a distance from the shoreline. The spheres are held together by a heavy duty strong flexible netting which permits movement of the spheres with the incoming and outgoing waves. Openings in the spheres permit the sea water to pass through. A plurality of smaller air-filled balls are disposed within the spheres to likewise rotate under the influence of water flow and provide buoyancy. A group of spheres within a common netting is tied to a pair of pilings at the ends of the netting to limit the extent of movement. Narrower sections of the netting between spheres provide a link and spacing for adjacent elements. Like groups of spheres in nettings can be disposed in parallel pairs with staggered spacing and an array of spaced groups in various geometric arrangements can extend along a large shore area. The combined effects of the netting, spheres and balls serve to dissipate wave energy to reduce shore erosion and can trap sand that would normally be washed away to permit restoration of shore areas.

摘要： An inflator comprising: a pressure vessel (10) for storing a quantity of stored inflation gas under pressure. The pressure vessel comprising a first burst disk (46) and a seal disk (310) both for selectively sealing same. The inflator (10) including a gas release mechanism (52, 300) for permitting the controlled, staged release of the inflation gas at determinable inflation rates. The gas release mechanism includes: a first pyrotechnic device, positioned outside of the pressure vessel and spaced from the first burst disk (46), including a piston (72) moved into a disk piercing position to rupture the first burst disk (46) in response to the buildup of pressure caused burning of a first quantity of propellant material (218). The bursting of the first burst disk permits the inflation gas to initially flow out of the pressure vessel at a determinable cold inflation rate, the piston thereafter provides a conduit to communicate the products of combustion of the burning propellent to the pressure means so as to increase the temperature of the inflation gas therein and thereby increase the rate of egress of the gas. The inflator (10) also includes a second pyrotechnic mechanism (300), positioned outside of the pressure vessel and spaced from the seal disk (310), for providing, when activated, additional products of combustion arising from burning of a second quantity of propellent material, the products of combustion opening the seal disk (310) and thereafter entering the pressure vessel to heat the inflation gas therein and thereby elevate the rate of egress of the inflation gas above the rate achievable by the first pyrotechnic device.

摘要： An inflator for an air cushion including a pressure vessel comprising a hollow sleeve for storing a quantity of inert gas such as Argon. One end of the sleeve is closed by a first pyrotechnic actuator assembly while the other end of the sleeve may include a closed end or another pyrotechnic actuator assembly. The pressure vessel is secured within a diffuser which directs inflation gases into the air cushion. The pressure vessel in cooperation with the diffuser defines various regions which assist in reducing the gas turbulence and heat transfer between the gas and the diffuser.

摘要： A shock-absorbing and motorist warning highway barrier is provided comprising a plurality of elongated upstanding units adapted to be joined in end to end relation, each unit comprising an outwardly flared base and an upstanding central portion having interfitting protrusions at opposed ends thereof facilitating end to end coupling of adjacent units, opposed side surfaces of the upstanding portion having a plurality of transversely aligned and longitudinally spaced recesses to receive resilient cylindrical members in a manner to protrude substantially from such surfaces, the cylindrical members being insertable and removable through the top of the unit and being secured in place by a cover member having downward protrusions interfitting with the aligned recesses in said unit. In preferred adaptations each unit may have a sinusoidal contour in the longitudinal dimension incorporating two sine curves, and/or the recesses and cylindrical members mounted therein may be outwardly inclined about 5.degree. to 10.degree. from the vertical. To facilitate direction change in aligning units to form a highway barrier, connecting units are provided having closely spaced angularly disposed coupling end portions, and providing at one side thereof one recess to receive a single resilient cylindrical member. The main barrier units and connecting units may be molded concrete, but are preferably formed as thin-walled plastic shells to be filled with water, sand or cement at the time of installation. The cylindrical members can be solid resilient members or thin-walled plastic members filled with compressed air, liquid or sand.

摘要： A sectional shock-absorbing and motorist warning highway barrier is provided in the form of multi-component sections about four feet in length, and adapted to be joined together in end-to-end relation to form a continuous barrier, each section being made up of four vertically aligned horizontal components, providing a top component, and two mid-components of uniform thickness, and a flared bottom component, such components having offsets at opposed ends thereof for aligning successive sections with such offsets having transverse apertures for receiving bolts in securing together successive sections, abutting surfaces of the horizontal components having aligned offsets of semi-spherical contour to receive spherical plastic bumper members protrudingly and rotatably supported in the assembled section. The horizontal components are fashioned from concrete, suitably encased in plastic shells, and the spherical plastic bumper members may be either air filled, or filled with water or sand for added weight. The offsets for aligning successive sections are for direct section-to-section engagement, or for reception of vertically oriented, and suitably flexible interfitting connecting members. With either type of section-to-section connections the free ends of a multi-sectional assemblage are provided with appropriately contoured vertical connecting members interfitting with the aligning offsets, preferably including means providing visibility enhancement.

摘要： A collapsible mixing drum is provided in which two similarly contoured, frustoconical members, one of which is open and the other closed at the small end, and both of which are provided with a plurality of circumferentially spaced and inwardly offset stiffening and mixing ribs, terminating in radial wall portions at the large ends of the frustoconical members, the radial wall portions having aligned apertures to receive axially oriented fasteners, are detachably joined together through clamping engagement with an annular ring member having on opposed radial surfaces thereof aligned grooves for sealably receiving circumferential edges of the large ends of the frustoconical members, and the outer surface of the ring member being contoured to provide a circumferential groove, gear teeth, or a combination thereof to facilitate rotational support and/or rotational driving of the assembled drum.The frustoconical members, and the axially extended ring if present, are preferably fashioned from polyethylene or other plastic material providing a durable light-weight structure from which hardened cement can readily be removed; and the collapsible nature of the drum provides space saving advantages in the manufacture, distribution and storage of mixing devices in which the drum is used.
