This invention relates to temples or end-pieces of temples for eyeglass frames. The temples are disclosed as having a wide variety of electrical and/or electronic components housed therein. Temples and hinges are also disclosed which attach to either the eyeglass frame itself or to the surface of a lens and which break apart from its attachment upon an impact without damage to the temple, the hinge, the frame, or the surface of the lens. A hinge is also disclosed for connecting a temple having a power source to an eyeglass frame and for providing an electrical connection with the frame only when the temple is opened.

A mirror assembly including an active lens and a reflective surface. The mirror assembly may change its refractive index when a voltage is applied to the active lens, thereby changing the field of view in the lens. Exemplary applications include a blind spot system in a motor vehicle, in which, upon sensing another vehicle in a driver's blind spot, the mirror assembly changes the driver's field of view to include the blind spot. Additional applications include a magnifying mirror for shaving or applying cosmetics.

Techniques and assemblies for steering light rays are described. An electro-optic prism configured to provide controllable steering of solar rays includes a first electrode including multiple substantially parallel linear electrodes positioned on a first substrate and a reference electrode positioned on a second substrate. An electro-optic material is positioned between the first electrode and the reference electrode. In one implementation, a wavelength selective filter is in optical communication with the electro-optic prism. The wavelength selective filter is configured to substantially eliminate selected wavelengths from solar rays before the solar rays are received by the electro-optic prism. In another implementation, a chemical compound is configured in the assembly to convert ultra-violet photons included in the solar rays into visible photons.

An electro-active spectacle lens is disclosed. The spectacle lens comprises a first substrate having a first outer region and first inner region, a first electrode layer disposed adjacent to the first inner region, the first electrode layer including an outer electrode region having a first conductivity and an inner electrode region having a second conductivity, the first conductivity being greater than the second conductivity, a second substrate having a second outer region and second inner region, a second electrode layer disposed adjacent to the second inner region, the second electrode layer having a third conductivity, and an electro-active cell disposed between the first electrode layer and the second electrode layer, the electro-active cell containing an electro-active material. The first outer region and second outer region are configurable for fitting the spectacle lens within a lens frame without altering the electro-active cell.

An electro-active phoropter and a method of using the electro-active phoropter to measure a patient's vision prescription is disclosed. The electro-active phoropter includes a series of individually addressable electro-active lenses. The lenses have either a positive or negative optical power when an electrical potential is applied across the lens and a neutral optical power when no electrical potential is applied across the lens. Each lens provides an optical power that is part of a net optical power of the series of lenses when a patient views through the phoropter. The optical power of the phoropter can be incrementally adjusted by changing the distribution of the electrical potential across the different lenses of the series to provide increasing or decreasing optical power until a patient achieves a desired level of clarity and a vision prescription has been determined.

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a floor display system comprising a floor covering and an electronic display device associated with the floor covering. The electronic display device is able to display electronically modifiable arbitrary content. The floor display system further comprises a controller and a sensing device coupled to the controller. The sensing device is associated with a specific location on the display device and generates a signal to the controller to cause a content of a display of the display device to be modified or newly generated at the specific location.

A range finder device for use with a controller in an optical system is disclosed in accordance with one embodiment of the invention. The range finder device comprises a transmitter to produce a first beam of non-visible radiation for intersecting a perceived object, and a receiver to detect non-visible radiation reflected from that object. The controller determines a viewing distance of the perceived object based on signals received from the transmitter and receiver. A method of controlling an optical lens system comprises utilizing a range finder device to determine a viewing distance of an object perceived through an electro-active lens and adjusting a focal length of a portion of the lens based on the viewing distance. An optical lens system comprises an electro-active lens and a controller to adjust a focal length of at least a portion of the electro-active lens based on a signal from a range finder device.

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a floor display system with interactive features. The floor display system may be arranged in a public place, and be configured to display electronically modifiable arbitrary content, such as advertising or other informational content. The floor display system may be configured to detect an indication of the presence or activity of a person in the vicinity, and upon detecting the indication, perform a corresponding action in response, such as generating a predetermined display or audio output.
