A linear peristaltic pump includes a mechanism for maintaining linear flow of fluid through an I.V. tube. The mechanism comprises a casing carrying a rotatable camshaft having a plurality of cams spaced therealong in helical arrangement and a plurality of fingers coupled to the camshaft. A housing for establishing linear reciprocal movement of the fingers in response to rotation of the shaft establishes a moving zone of occlusion along a tube held against the fingers. Aligning means are included for establishing an axis of rotation of the camshaft which is slightly tilted with respect to the tube. This is accomplished by raising or lowering the upstream or the downstream end of the camshaft to prevent unwanted pressure from building up in the tube to reduce pulsatile flow and maintain linear flow. The aligning mechanism comprises a generally cylindrical bushing having an eccentric hole therethrough for carrying the hinged connection between the casing and the housing. The bushing has a slot therethrough for adjustably rotating the bushing for adjusting the amount of tilt. The adjustment can take place during operation of the pump, having a pressure sensor against the tube, to achieve the optimal positioning of the camshaft depending on the tolerances of the pump mechanism to establish linear flow of fluid through the tube.

Cam lobes are formed to lift a penultimate and ultimate finger off of the tube at a rate faster than the other fingers to prevent pressure increases inside the tube which would otherwise be caused by other fingers urging against the tube. Additionally, the ultimate finger may be shortened with respect to the other fingers to reduce the total occlusion time of the ultimate finger to provide a more linearized flow of fluid to the patient.

An embolic protection device for use in a blood vessel when an interventional procedure is being performed in a stenosed or occluded region to capture any embolic material which may be created and released into the bloodstream during the procedure. The device includes a filtering assembly having a self-expanding strut assembly and a filter element attached thereto. In one embodiment, the filtering assembly is attached to the distal end of a guidewire and is deployed within the patient's vasculature as the guidewire is manipulated into the area of treatment. A restraining sheath placed over the filtering assembly in a coaxial arrangement maintains the filtering assembly in its collapsed position until it is ready to be deployed by the physician. Thereafter, the sheath can be retracted to expose the filtering assembly which will then self-expand within the patient's vasculature. Interventional devices can be delivered over the guidewire and any embolic debris created during the interventional procedure and released into the blood stream will enter the filtering assembly and be captured therein. Other embodiments include filtering assemblies attached to an outer tubular member and inner shaft member which apply axial force to the distal ends of the assembly to either expand or contract the struts as needed.

The pump also comprises a peristable finger to conditionally occlude the line and a miroprocessor, upon occlusion of the line, to establish fluid pressure parameters within which the indication is that there is no partial restriction in the line. The pump also uses the microprocessor to compare actual pressure measured by the gauge during an occlusion with the established parameters to determine whether pump operation is to be continued.

A user profile can include information about the user's past viewing behavior. One exemplary embodiment uses a local content player software application to maintain a user profile based on contextual, behavioral, demographic, and other data linked to the content, the user's viewing habits, and/or location, among other things. Such a content player can select advertisements by matching user content information with user profile information. User profile information can be limited to local use to protect user privacy concerns.

The extrudable polymer cartridge may have a variety of configurations including multiple layers of different materials, eccentric shapes, multiple lumens for multiple elements to be drawn through and coated and asymmetric disposition of different materials with respect to the longitudinal axis as viewed in a transverse cross section which can give bending properties having a preferred direction in the coated guidewire or device.
