An electronic device and an operating method thereof are provided, wherein the electronic device includes a first infrared sensor and a display unit for displaying a frame. In the present operating method, an individual operation is defined for the first infrared sensor, wherein the individual operation is to turn the frame over or to move a position of a cursor displayed in the frame. If a period for which the first infrared sensor has sensed infrared radiation from an object is shorter than a first predetermined value, the first infrared sensor is determined as being temporarily hidden and the individual operation is performed.

A method for inputting characters is provided. In the present invention, a touch-sensitive keypad is used for a hand-held electronic device to enter a text input mode. Multiple characters represented by a key are displayed by turns and repeatedly over a predefined period of time. Thus, the number of times for operating the keypad can be reduced and the efficiency of inputting characters can be improved. Further, the input of English alphabets and Arabic numerals can be switched automatically through alternatively displaying the characters. Therefore, the convenience of using a hand-held electronic device can be enhanced.

The present invention is to provide a method of automatically enabling or disabling backlight of an electronic device based on a predetermined time, which is implemented in the electronic device including a memory having an established backlight control database containing a predetermined enabled and disabled time of backlight respectively. In response to a user pressing a key of the keypad as determined by the electronic device, the electronic device is able to automatically read and inquire the predetermined enabled or disabled time of backlight, and activate or deactivate the keypad backlight immediately when a predetermined condition (i.e., the predetermined enabled or disabled time of backlight) has been reached.
