The system for providing computer guided ablation of tissue of a patient includes an imaging device, an ablative surgical computer system, and a set of surgical devices. The imaging device receives imaging data from a treatment region of a patient, processes the imaging data and provides imaging output data and imaging signals. The imaging output data is available to an operator. The ablative surgical computer system includes a guidance module for processing the imaging signals and providing a treatment guidance plan to the operator; and, a treatment module for acquiring and processing surgical device output data, for optimally controlling treatment parameters and providing feedback information to the operator based on the treatment guidance plan. The set of surgical devices includes at least one integrated ablative/temperature sensing device including at least one ablative device for providing ablation of the treatment region based on the treatment parameters and operator input; and, at least one temperature sensing device for acquiring temperature data from the treatment region and providing a temperature sensing device output signal. The temperature sensing device output signal is a portion of the surgical device output data. The treatment guidance plan is utilized for placing the integrated ablative/temperature sensing device into the treatment region.

In the first embodiment, the stent delivery device comprises an outer sheath and an inner tubular member which distally ends in a tongue having an arcuate cross section. In a second embodiment, the stent delivery device further comprises a housing having a lumen extending longitudinally therethrough, the lumen holding the inner tubular member. A guide pin attached to the outer sheath is slidably disposed within the housing wherein the guide pin may be longitudinally displaced with respect to the lumen. In addition, an endoscope mounting plate may be slidably disposed along the housing. Detents may be used to releasably prevent a proximal displacement of the guide pin within the lumen of the housing as well as to releasably prevent the proximal displacement of the endoscope mounting plate with respect to the housing.

The computer system is capable of acquiring and displaying images of the prostate of a patient for assisting a surgeon in placing ablative elements in the prostate of the patient. The computer system is programmed with software capable of: 1) determining the dimensions of the prostate; and, 2) determining the dimensions and location of a treatment zone. The treatment zone is determined to include only one neurovascular bundle of the prostate and exclude the other neurovascular bundle of the prostate. The system utilizes the determined dimensions of the prostate and treatment zone for computing the number and location of ablative elements needed to treat the treatment zone while minimizing any adverse effect on the patient's sexual function.

A stent system and method for use in the prostate gland. The stent is made of a shape memory alloy such as nitinol, and has a low temperature martensite state, with a martensite transition temperature below body temperature, and a high temperature austenite state, with an austenite transition temperature at or above body temperature, and a memorized shape in the high temperature austenite state which is a helical coil of diameter large enough to hold the prostatic urethra open. The stent is used to heat the prostate and is left in the prostatic urethra while the prostate heals. After the prostate is substantially healed, the stent is cooled to its martensite state and is easily removed from the urethra.

A placement guide for positioning ablation devices within a human body is disclosed. The placement guide comprise an outer catheter and an inner tubular member disposed within a lumen of the outer catheter. When a stop on the inner tubular member engages a seat on the outer catheter, a distal projection of the inner tubular member extends from the distal end of the outer catheter. While monitoring the position of the inner tubular member through an endoscope inserted in its lumen, a clinician positions the distal projection within a human body for optimal ablation. After securing the outer catheter in position, the inner tubular member is withdrawn and replaced with an ablation device which is inserted distally within the outer catheter lumen until a stop on the ablation device engages the seat on the outer catheter wherein a distal projection of the ablation device extends from the distal end of the outer catheter. Because the distal projection of the inner tubular member has a length substantially identical to that of the inner tubular member, the ablation device may be positioned for optimal ablation.
