    摘要: This invention relates to a method of welding low carbon steel using an electron beam. The portion of the workpiece being welded is located in an evacuated welding zone and a deoxidizing metal backup member is disposed in spaced relation to the joint to be welded. During welding, the electron beam vaporizes a portion of the deoxidizing metal and the release of the metal vapor aids in increasing the soundness of the weld.

    摘要: This disclosure relates to an electron beam welding apparatus having a cylindrical outer housing. A plurality of equally circumferentially spaced chambers are secured to a central rotating support and project outwardly into sealing engagement with the outer housing. Operating stations are located about the assembly and include a loading station, a pair of vacuum pumping stations, a welding station and an unloading station. The welding station includes an opening through which an electron beam gun is secured to the outer portion of the housing in alignment with the opening. The gun is mounted to rotate to establish a circular weld.

    摘要: A tubular metal blank having two longitudinally opposed edges welded to form a seam by a process and apparatus therefor including heating the edges to a welding temperature at a first station and pressing the edges together at the first station to initially weld the edges thereof and provide extruded metal outwardly of the seam provided by the weld. Then the weld seam and extruded metal is electron beam welded at a second station with the initial weld being refined by the electron beam welding and undercutting in the weld being prevented by the formation of the extruded metal from the weld area. Additional metal may be added prior to the electron beam welding station to provide additional material at the weld seam to overcome the problem of undercutting.

    摘要: The side member and crossmember of a vehicle frame are mounted in a fixture within a sealed welding chamber at a welding station and a plurality of electron welding guns are arranged along a weld line for simultaneous welding of the several components of the frame with the beams of the guns overlapping to provide an uninterrupted continuous weld. A loading station and an unloading station is mounted to the opposite sides of the welding station and connected thereto by a vacuum lock transfer station. The welded frame is coated with a protective metal such as aluminum or zinc by passing the welded frame through a metal vapordepositing chamber disposed immediately in-line following the welding chamber.
