A bifunctional alkyl phosphine oxide which is represented by the following general formula (1), ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents tert-butyl or 1,1,3,3-tetramethylbutyl, and a production method thereof. This organophosphorus compound is useful a wide variety of fields including a flame retardant, antistatic additive, antibacterial agent, dyeing-improving agent, resin modifier, stain-proofing agent, and rust preventives. This compound can be produced industrially advantageously.

A treating agent for cellulosic textile materials includes a water-soluble phosphonium salt of phosphorus-containing oxoacid and polycarboxylic acid as active ingredients, and a process of treating cellulosic textile materials uses the treating agent. The treating agent eliminates the necessity of the use of a substance releasing formaldehyde during wash and wear treatment and enables non-formaldehyde wash and wear treatment, and the cellulosic textile material treated by the treating agent is completely free from formaldehyde, retains enough of the strength thereof, and undergoes neither discoloration nor fibrillation.

An antimicrobial polymer obtained by homo- or copolymerizing a phosphonium salt type vinyl monomer, such as 2-(methacrylic acid) ethyltri-n-octylphosphonium chloride, and a contact lens and an article for its care mainly comprising an antimicrobial resin obtained by copolymerizing a polymerizable monomer and a phosphonium salt type vinyl monomer are disclosed. The antimicrobial polymer has a broad antimicrobial spectrum and produces a sufficient antimicrobial effect after a short contact time. The contact lens and article for its care are hardly effected by contamination with microorganisms while retaining excellent optical performance and processability.
