Abstract: Disclosed are ophthalmic devices formed by a process comprising: (a) providing a reactive composition containing: (i) a polymerization initiator that is capable, upon a first activation, of forming two or more free radical groups, at least one of which is further activatable by subsequent activation; (ii) one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds; and (iii) a crosslinker; (b) subjecting the reactive composition to a first activation step such that the reactive composition polymerizes therein to form a crosslinked substrate network containing a covalently bound activatable free radical initiator; (c) deactivating at least a portion of the covalently bound activatable free radical initiator at one or more selective regions of the crosslinked substrate network such that the crosslinked substrate network contains retained covalently bound activatable free radical initiator outside of the one or more selective regions and optionally within the one or more selective regions; (d) contacting the crosslinked substrate network with a grafting composition containing one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds, wherein the contacting is conducted under conditions such that the grafting composition penetrates into the crosslinked substrate network; and (e) activating the retained covalently bound activatable free radical initiator such that the grafting composition polymerizes with the crosslinked substrate network, thereby forming grafted polymeric networks, outside of the selective regions and optionally partially within the selective regions.

Abstract: Systems and kits for replenishing an electrowetting ophthalmic device are described. In an embodiment, the system includes an electrowetting ophthalmic device including a lens material defining a cavity encasing an aqueous electrowetting solution; a replenishing solution having an osmolarity approximately equal to an osmolarity of the aqueous electrowetting solution; and a container shaped to carry the electrowetting ophthalmic device and the replenishing solution and to position the electrowetting ophthalmic device in contact with the replenishing solution when the electrowetting ophthalmic device and the replenishing solution are carried by the container. In an embodiment, the osmolarity of the aqueous electrowetting solution is higher than an osmolarity of a tear fluid of an eye.

Abstract: An objective of the present invention is to provide a method for manufacturing a soft ocular lens in which the surface of the lens is hydrophilized by means of plasma processing, wherein a substrate surface can be sufficiently hydrophilized by performing, once, a reaction between the substrate and a hydrophilic polymer. Another object of the present invention is to provide a soft ocular lens with sufficient hydrophilicity which comprises only one layer comprising a hydrophilic polymer on a substrate surface. A substrate comprising a hydrocarbon group-containing polysiloxane is subjected to plasma processing with an inert gas such as nitrogen, to form a radical including Si—CH2 on the substrate surface, and produce radical rearrangement with a hydrophilic polymer, thereby causing the hydrophilic polymer to bind to the substrate surface by recombination of a radical generated in the hydrophilic polymer with the substrate.

Abstract: A contact lens having antioxidant properties is described as well as methods of manufacturing the same. The contact lens can be present in a sealed contact lens package. The seal contact lens package can include at least a) a plastic base member having a cavity; b) a contact lens packaging solution in the cavity; c) a sterile, unworn contact lens immersed in the contact lens packaging solution in the cavity; and d) a cover that forms a liquid-tight seal with the plastic base member. As an example, the unworn contact lens is a silicone hydrogel contact lens having present therein vitamin E. The vitamin E is non-releasable from the unworn contact lens and the contact lens packaging solution has less than 1 ppm of vitamin E present. The vitamin E is trapped, embedded, absorbed, or non-covalently attached in the unworn contact lens.

Abstract: Described herein are wound dressing comprising a silicone hydrogel composition and optionally an antimicrobial agent, and methods of making and use thereof. The silicone hydrogel compositions comprise an actinically-crosslinkable polysiloxane-polyglycerol block copolymer crosslinked with a crosslinker. The actinically-crosslinkable polysiloxane-polyglycerol block copolymer being derived from: a polysiloxane prepolymer comprising a polyglycerol side chain, the polyglycerol side chain comprising an ethylenically unsaturated group covalently linked thereto, wherein the ethylenically unsaturated group is actinically curable.
