Client data bits, including first client data bits and second client data bits, are communicated from a transmitter to a receiver. At the transmitter, the first client data bits are processed to generate processed values, where each processed value is more likely to be a first element than a second element. Forward Error Correction ‘FEC’ encoding is applied to the second client data bits to generate FEC-encoded values. Symbols are created by mapping the FEC-encoded values to first positions in the symbols and by mapping the processed values to second positions in the symbols. The symbols are modulated onto a communications channel using a modulation scheme with a code that assigns a lower average energy to symbols containing the first elements in the second positions than to symbols containing the second elements in the second positions. At the receiver, client data bits are decoded using conditional chain decoding.

A system is configured to measure a forward error correction (FEC) decoding property associated with applying FEC decoding to FEC-encoded bits or symbols at a receiver device deployed in a communication network. The system is further configured to provide an assessment of operating conditions of the receiver device based on the FEC decoding property. In one example, the FEC decoding property comprises a distribution of a number of iterations of a FEC decoding operation applied to a plurality of FEC blocks processed within a period of time. In some examples, the FEC decoding property comprises any one of heat, temperature, current, voltage, active clock cycles, idle clock cycles, activity of parallel engines, activity of pipeline stages, and input or output buffer fill level of the FEC decoding. In some examples, the assessment is based on a comparison between the FEC decoding property and reference FEC data.

In a coherent optical receiver of an optical communications system, methods and systems for receiving a data signal x(t) modulated on an optical signal. A linearly polarized LO light is generated, which has a frequency of f1=f0±Δf, where f0 is a frequency of a narrowband carrier of the optical signal, and Δf corresponds with a band-width fB of the data signal x(t). The LO light and a received light of the optical signal are heterodyned on a photodetector. An analog signal generated by the photodetector is low-pass filtered to generate a filtered signal, using a filter characteristic having a sharp cut-off at a frequency of Δf+nfB, where n is an integer multiple. An analog-to digital (A/D) converter samples the filtered signal at a sample rate of 2(Δf+nfB) to generate a corresponding multi-bit digital sample stream. The multi-bit digital sample stream is digitally processed to recover respective In-Phase and Quadrature components of the received light of the optical signal.

In data communications, a suitably designed contrast coding scheme, comprising a process of contrast encoding at a transmitter end and a process of contrast decoding at a receiver end, may be used to adjust the contrast in bit error rate (BER) experienced by different classes of bits. Contrast coding may be used to tune the BERs experienced by different subsets of bits, relative to each other, to better match a plurality of forward error correction (FEC) schemes used for transmission of information bits, which may ultimately provide a communications system having a higher noise tolerance, or greater data capacity, or smaller size, or lower heat.

The optical transmitter is configured to modulate an optical carrier in successive signalling intervals to generate an optical signal. A modulation scheme is provided which comprises a multi-dimensional symbol constellation. The modulation scheme is designed such that an average degree of polarization of a modulated optical signal output from the optical transmitter has a first value when averaged across a first signalling interval, and has a second value when averaged across more than one and fewer than 100 signalling intervals. The second value is less than 10 percent of the first value. During run-time, an encoder of the optical transmitter encoding a data signal to be transmitted as symbols of the constellation, and a modulator of the optical transmitter modulating available dimensions of the optical carrier in accordance with the symbols.

Forward Error Correction technique: parity vectors are computed such that each parity vector spans multiple FEC frames; in a given FEC frame, a first set of syndrome bits are due to the parity vectors, and a second set of syndrome bits satisfy FEC equations that involve bits of the given FEC frame including the first set of syndrome bits; and the parity vectors are staggered with respect to any sequence in which the FEC frames are processed. Values of decoded bits of a first frame are deduced from known bits of a first parity vector having an effective length of one frame. For parity vectors having an effective length greater than one frame, a Log Likelihood Ratio of each unknown bit associated with the first frame is updated based on known and unknown bits of each parity vector. First frame is decoded using deduced bit values and updated LLR values.
