A seat belt load limiter employs a magnetostrictive sensor to detect the elastic loading and plastic deformation of a torsion rod forming part of a seat belt retractor. A magnet and a coil are placed about or adjacent to the torsion rod. When the torsion rod undergoes elastic or plastic strain, an electrical voltage is induced in the coil which is used to detect elastic or plastic strain of the torsion rod. A vehicle safety system uses the output of the magnetostrictive sensor to inform the vehicle operator when the seat belt load limiter is in need of replacement. The output of the magnetostrictive sensor as processed by the vehicle safety system can also be used to detect a situation where the seat occupant is not restrained by the seat belt and to make an airbag deployment decision.

A method for sensing the occurrence of a vehicle crash is provided for a vehicle having an occupant restraint system operatively connected with a crash sensor having an accelerometer, which produces an accelerometer signal, and with an occupant position sensor which produces a position signal. The crash sensor includes an adjustable filter. The method includes the steps of: a) calculating an estimated occupant displacement by integrating the accelerometer signal twice; b) comparing the estimated occupant displacement to the position signal; and c) adjusting the adjustable filter based upon the comparing step to optimize control of the occupant restraint system. In this manner, actual body position of the occupant may be more accurately predicted and measured, which allows optimization of air bag deployment.

Three closure parts 5 are provided for closing the aperture 3. The closure parts 5 are rotatably mounted adjacent to the aperture 3 about pivots 9 located around the periphery of the aperture. A drive means is provided for moving the closure parts between an open position and a closed position. A suitable fan 6 can be provided for drawing air through the aperture when the closure parts are in the open position. In a first aspect of the invention, the closure parts 5 each comprise closures surfaces having edges, the edges abutting one another in the closed position. In a second aspect of the invention, there is drive member 12 for contacting a drive part 11 of a closure part 5, the drive part 11 being located close to the pivot 9. In a third aspect of the invention, the drive means 12 is configured to act on a drive part 11 of each closure part, the pivot 9 and the drive part 11 being mounted on the same side of the closure part 5.

A barrier assembly for a Langmuir trough is arranged for a substrate to be carried automatically to-and-fro on a dipping head over a fixed barrier into monomolecular layers A, B on a common subphase so as to stack layers ABABAB . . . on the substrate. The layers A, B are confined by the barrier and two constant perimeter areas formed by a single flexible band passing over rollers. By adjusting the positions of bridges that carry some of the rollers, the confined areas can be contracted to compress the layers A, B. In an alternative mode the substrate receives a layer from layer A while a new layer B is being formed, the substrate then being transferred to layer B while a new layer A is being formed. This involves an oscillating rather than a rotating movement of the substrate.
