The present disclosure relates to improved raised pavement markers having a totally-internal-reflective lens. The disclosure also relates to methods of manufacturing the raised pavement marker. The raised pavement markers described below include a housing connected to a totally-internal-reflective lens. The totally-internal-reflective lens includes a retroreflective element having a smooth surface generally opposite a plurality of cube corner elements. A film is attached to the retroreflective element at the apexes of the cube corner elements to form spaces, i.e., an air gap, between the film and the cubes. The film and retroreflective element cooperate to form the totally-internal-reflective lens. Light entering the retroreflective element through the smooth surface is retroreflected at the cube/air interface. Methods of manufacturing include, for example, forming a shell with the retroreflective element and attaching the film to the apexes of the cube corner elements.

The present application relates to a sign including: (1) a sign blank including multiple first interlockable members; and (2) optically active sheeting including multiple second interlockable members; wherein the first and second matable members interlock with one another to hold the sign blank and the sheeting together.

When mounted to a vehicle, a dispenser ejects optical elements so that they have a component of movement that is parallel with the surface of the pavement to which the optical elements are to be applied. Preferably, the component of movement in that direction is more significant than a component of movement directly toward the pavement surface. A fluid assist causes the optical elements to be ejected from the dispenser nozzle at a velocity to at least partially counteract, and preferably match, the forward velocity of movement of the vehicle to which the dispenser is attached. Thus, in accordance with one specific aspect of the present invention, optical elements can be laid down upon marking material that has been applied to a pavement surface at a substantially reduced relative velocity to the road surface. By more closely matching the optical element velocity in a direction opposite the vehicle movement to the velocity of the vehicle, the optical elements can be laid down without substantial roll along the pavement marking material. This can be accomplished regardless of the size or mass of the optical elements. The result is that the retroreflectivity of the pavement marking is thus not compromised or negatively affected in either direction (i.e. in the direction of vehicle travel or in the opposite direction).

A pavement marker has an unpotted upper shell and a lower base plate that together define a housing. A number of ribs are disposed in the housing interior oriented substantially perpendicular to the inner wall of the base plate. The upper shell has inclined end faces, an upper face, and is made of a plastic material having moderate to high flexural modulus and a high impact strength. The lower base plate has a planar inner wall and an opposed planar, pavement-engaging outer wall, and is made of a material having a Young's modulus of at least approximately 300,000 PSI (20.7.times.10.sup.8 Pascal). The ribs are formed unitarily with the inner wall of either the upper shell or the base plate, and extend upwardly from the inner wall of the base plate to the inner wall of the shell. A retroreflective lens is positioned on at least one of the first and second opposed side faces of the marker. The pavement marker resists delamination from a roadway surface when secured to the road with a soft adhesive.

A pavement marking article that has an adhesive composition for adhering the article to a pavement substrate, where the adhesive composition includes a reaction product of an acrylic acid ester of a monohydric alcohol whose homopolymer has a Tg less than 0° C., a non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and 0-10 parts by weight of a polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer. Preferably the amount of the acrylic acid ester is about 60-90 parts by weight, and the amount of the non-polar ethylenically unsaturated monomer is about 10-40 parts by weight. Also, a raised pavement marker that comprises: (a) a pavement marker body having upper and lower surfaces and an apparent flexural modulus of at least about 50,000 psi and (b) a pressure sensitive adhesive layer disposed upon the lower surface of the marker, wherein the adhesive has: (i) a transition region that begins at a frequency of about 10,000 radians/s or more and extends to a frequency of about 100 radians/s or less at about 25° C.; and (ii) a minimum shear modulus of about 1×105 Pa at an impact frequency of about 100 radians/s at 25° C.; and (iii) a shear modulus value of about 2×104 to 2×105 Pa at a frequency of 1 rad/sec at 25° C. Raised pavement markers that use a pressure sensitive adhesive meeting parameters (i)-(iii) can demonstrate good adhesion to roadways and are capable of withstanding repeated impacts from motor vehicle tires.

A fiber-reinforced raised pavement marker made of a composite material comprising an isotropic mixture of a polymeric material, reinforcing fibers and a filler material. The results of finite element analysis and composite technology have been combined to produce a pavement marker having high flexural strength and impact resistance without the need for an impact-resistant shell. Durable, high strength composite pavement markers are made by casting a homogenous mixture of chopped glass fibers and a filler material in a polymeric matrix. Placement of a retroreflective lens within the mold followed by pouring and curing the composite material results in a finished product upon release from the mold.
