Abstract: Provided is a collection of polymer beads, wherein the volume distribution expressed as a function of bead diameter comprises (A1) a first peak having a maximum of PM1 at diameter PD1 and having full width at half maximum of 75 μm or less, (A2) a second peak having a maximum of PM2 at diameter PD2 and having full width at half maximum of 75 μm or less; and (B1) a valley having a minimum value of VM1 at a diameter between PD1 and PD2, wherein VM1 is less than 0.25*PM1 and VM1 is also less than 0.25*PM2. wherein the polymer beads comprise polymerized units of one or more monofunctional vinyl monomer and one or more multifunctional vinyl monomer.

Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid-crystalline elastomer having large generation force and a large amount of displacement. The liquid-crystalline elastomer according to the present invention is composed of a polymer of liquid-crystalline molecular units and cross-linking reagent units. Each of the cross-linking reagent units contains a bicyclo structure selected from the group consisting of a bicyclo [2,2,1] heptane structure or a bicyclo [2,2,2] octane structure. A molar ratio of the cross-linking reagents to the liquid-crystalline molecular units is not less than 0.1 and not more than 0.2. The bicyclo [2,2,1] heptane structure may be a trycyclodecane structure. The bicyclo [2,2,2] octane structure may be a trycycloundecane structure.

Abstract: Side-chain crystallizable (SCC) polymers are useful in various medical applications. In certain applications, heavy atom containing side-chain crystallizable polymers (HACSCCP's) are particularly useful. An example of a HACSCCP is a polymer that comprises a main chain, a plurality of crystallizable side chains, and a plurality of heavy atoms attached to the polymer. In certain configurations, the heavy atoms are present in an amount that is effective to render the polymer radiopaque. A polymeric material that includes an HACSCCP may be fabricated into a medical device useful for at least partially occluding a body cavity. For example, such a medical device may be an embolotherapy product. A polymeric material that includes a SCC polymer may also be fabricated into other medical devices, such as stents.

Abstract: A mill base composition includes a compound comprising a divinyl ester of a dicarboxylic acid, a dispersing agent, and a pigment. The divinyl ester of the carboxylic acid includes from 2 to about 8 carbon atoms. The mill base composition is subjected to milling with milling beads to produce a milled mill base composition that functions as a pigment concentrate that may be added to an ink vehicle to form an ink composition suitable for use in inkjet ink devices. The milled mill base composition is particularly suited for UV curable ink compositions. A UV curable ink composition includes the pigment concentrate, one or more UV curable monomers, and one or more UV initiators.

Abstract: The invention provides an actinically-polymerizable amphiphilic polysiloxane which comprises a polysiloxane polymer chain comprising a polylsiloxane segments comprising at least one siloxane unit having a low molecular weight hydrophilic polymer chain connected with a silicone atom of the siloxane unit, and (meth)acrylamido groups each covalently bonded to one of the ends of the polysiloxane polymer chain and/or to the end of one of low molecular weight hydrophilic polymer chains each connected with one silicone atom. The present invention is also related to a polymer, an actinically-crosslinkable silicone-containing prepolymer, a silicone hydrogel polymeric material, or a silicone hydrogel contact lens, which comprises repeating units derived from an actinically-polymerizable amphiphilic polysiloxane of the invention. In addition, the invention provides a method for making silicone hydrogel contact lenses using a water-based lens-forming formulation comprising an actinically-polymerizable amphiphilic polysiloxane of the invention and/or an actinically-crosslinkable silicone-containing prepolymer of the invention.

Abstract: Methods are described for activating a glass fiber or flake to participate in polymerizing a resin. The methods may include sizing the glass fiber or flake with a sizing composition that includes a solution containing a polymerization initiator, and activating the polymerization initiator by forming a free radical moiety on the polymerization initiator that can initiate the polymerization of the resin. Additional methods of making a glass reinforced composite are described. The methods may include sizing glass fibers or flakes with a sizing composition that includes a solution containing a polymerization initiator, forming a free radical moiety on the polymerization initiator to make activated glass fibers or flakes, and contacting the activated glass fibers or flakes with a polymer resin. The activated glass fibers or flakes initiate the polymerization of the resin around the glass fibers or flakes to form the glass reinforced composite.
