A method, medium, and wireless system are provided for scheduling access terminals to prevent starvation of other access terminals connected to a communication network. The wireless system includes access terminals and base stations that are configured with a first wireless scheduler and a parallel wireless scheduler that select access terminals to communicate during specified time slots. The access terminals may measure channel conditions associated with communications to the base station and transmit requests that specify a desired communication rate to the base station. The first and parallel wireless schedulers on each base station receive the requests from each access terminal and select an access terminal to communicate during a subsequent time slot that may be based on, for example, the channel conditions and weighted average functions of the communication rates—corresponding to the access terminal—generated by the first and parallel wireless schedulers.

Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for deriving population counts and device flow characteristics on wireless communication networks. In a particular embodiment, a method provides receiving a first control signal transmitted by a first base station serving a first wireless sector and receiving a second control signal transmitted by a second base station serving a second wireless sector. The method further provides deriving a population count of a geographic area using device identifiers enumerated within the first and second control signals.

A method, system, and medium are provided for estimating a location of a user using location information of the user's friends. The user's friends are identified, and a social-interaction strength between the user and each of the friends is determined. This results in a set of weights of social ties that respectively indicate a level of social interaction between the user and the user's friends. The location of the friends is determined. The user's location is estimated based on the set of weights of social ties and the friend locations.

A method, medium, and wireless system are provided for scheduling access terminals to prevent starvation of access terminals connected to a communication network when one or more recently-connected access terminals having limited historical information about their channel conditions request time slots to initiate network communications. The wireless system includes access terminals and base stations that communicate over the communication network. The access terminals measure channel conditions associated with communications to the base station and transmit requests that specify a desired communication rate to the base station. The base stations receive the requests from each access terminal and select an access terminal to communicate during a subsequent time slot based on, among other things, the channel conditions and weighted average functions of the communication rate corresponding to the access terminal.

Systems, methods and computer-readable media for detecting potential data fraud in a telecommunications environment are provided. The methods include referencing a characteristic associated with a device, where the characteristic provides an indication of a device type for a device. From the referenced characteristic, a device type is predicted. A comparison is made between the predicted device type and an expected device type that is identified based on the credentials being used by the device. Thereafter, a determination that the device is potentially performing data fraud can be made based on whether predicted device type matches the expected device type.

Methods for evaluating data packets addressed to a wireless communication device are disclosed herein. When in a dormant state, a wireless communication device receives page messages indicating a source of data packets addressed to the wireless communication device and determines whether the data packets represent unwanted traffic. When in an active state, the wireless communication device examines data packets to determine if the received packets represent unwanted traffic, and in response to determining that the traffic is unwanted, the wireless communication device transitions into a dormant state or enters an idle state from which the wireless communication can transition into the dormant state.

An embodiment of the current invention is directed to facilitating a location-based service for use by a given mobile-device. A location of each of a number of base stations that makes up a portion of a wireless-telecommunications-network is identified. For a given base station, the probability that it provides a level of signal coverage to a geographical area that would enable the mobile-device in the first geographical area to communicate with the network is determined. A density of possible locations that the mobile-device may be within the geographical area is determined. A position for the mobile-device is approximated based on the density. A location-based service is facilitated for use by the mobile-device based on the position of the mobile-device.
