The hair styling stick contains from 30 to 55 percent by weight of one or more polyethylene glycols with a molecular weight of from 2500 to 5000 g/mol; and from 40 to 70 percent by weight of at least one other polyethylene glycol with a molecular weight of from 570 to 800 g/mol together with cosmetic ingredients. The aqueous hair fixing gel has special rheological properties so that it can be dispensed from a container without dripping or becoming stringy. It contains from 1.5 to 10 percent by weight of at least one itaconic acid monoester/acrylate copolymer and from 0.1 to 15 percent by weight of at least one non-ionic, anionic, zwitterionic or amphoteric hair-fixing polymer. The itaconic acid monoester has a formula CH2═C(COOR1)CH2COOR2, wherein one of R1 and R2 represents hydrogen and the other represents —(CH2CH2O)x—R3, x is between 1 to 100 and R3 is an alkyl group having 8 to 30 carbon atoms. The aqueous hair treatment gel has a pH of greater than 7 and a viscosity of preferably from 2000 to 50,000 mPa.s, as measured at 25° C. The gel is formulated so that there is a gel viscosity maximum as a function of shear rate with increasing shear rate, preferably between 0.1 to 5.0 s−1.

Gasified particles for cosmetic treatments, particularly hair treatments, are described. The gasified particles contain at least one gas enclosed in a solid enveloping material. The enveloping material is selected so that the gas is released on contact of the enveloping material with water or moisture. The release of the gas can be accompanied by a detectable acoustic effect (pop effect). The hair treatment composition also can provide a hair fixing effect. Furthermore an instant gel preparation is described substantially comprising a mixture of dry substances, which contains at least one gel former and at least one solid substance producing a detectable acoustic effect on contact with moisture, especially gasified particles. The gasified particles are used as acoustic indicators for the readiness of the instant preparation after liquid addition.

The aqueous-alcoholic hair fixing composition contains from 0.1 to 10 percent by weight of shellac, neutralized from 50 to 100%; from 0.01 to 20 percent by weight of at least one film-forming hair fixing synthetic polymer, advantageously a terpolymer made from octylacrylamide, t-butylamino-ethylmethacrylate and at least two monomers selected from the group consisting of methacrylic acid, esters of acrylic acid and esters of methacrylic acid; from 30 to 70 percent by weight of at least one alcohol containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; from 30 to 70 percent by weight water; and, for compositions to be sprayed by means of a propellant, from 15 to 85% by weight of a propellant, advantageously dimethylether, an alkane, N2, N2O or CO2. The combination of the shellac and the synthetic hair fixing polymer causes a synergistic viscosity lowering which advantageously promotes rinsibility without impairing fixing performance.

The invention is directed to cosmetic compositions for the treatment of hair or skin characterized in that they contain new N-hydroxybutyl-chitosans, or their salts, consisting of(a) 4 to 40 mole percent monomer units of the formula (I) ##STR1## and (b) 60 to 96 mole percent monomer units of the formula (II) ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are identical or different and designate hydrogen or the group ##STR3## with n being equal to an integer from 1 to 5, provided that R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are not simultaneously hydrogen in at least 50 percent of the units of formula (II). In addition, it is directed to new N-hydroxybutyl-chitosans and their salts and a process for producing these new compounds from butylene oxide and chitosan.
