GRAFT COPOLYMERS ARE PREPARED IN A TWO-STAGE PROCESS BY FIRST REACTING, FOR EXAMPLE, 1,2-POLYBUTADIENE OR AN ETHYLENE/PROPYLENE/ALKYLIDENE NORBORNENE TERPOLYMER, WITH A MIXTURE OF DINITROGEN TETROXIDE AND OXYGEN TO FORM A NITROOXIDIZED BACKBONE POLYMER HAVING INCORPORATED THEREIN NITRO AND PEROXY NITRATE FUNCTIONS WHICH SERVE, IN THE SECOND STAGE OF THE PROCESS, AS SITES FOR THE SUBSEQUENT GRAFT POLYMERIZATION OF AN ACRYLATE MONOMER.

POLYACRYLATE CASTINGS ARE PREPARED BY FIRST FORMING A VISCOUS PREPOLYMER BY INTIAMATELY ADMIXING AN ACRYLIC ACID ESTER WITH AN AMINE INITIATOR, SUCH AS MORPHOLINE, AND THEN, IN A SECOND STEP, COMPLETING THE POLYMERIZATION IN A MOLD THUS FORMING A CLEAR POLYACRYLATE CASTING.

Abstract:
The properties, in particular the impact strength, of polycarbonate resins having an average molecular weight of at least 8000 are improved by blending such resins with from about 3 percent to about 35 percent by weight of at least one elastomer characterized by an average molecular weight ranging from about 100,000 to about 2,000,000 and a second order transition (Tg) below 0*C.
