Abstract: Antibiotic compounds having both antibiotic and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. The compounds comprise an azole antibiotic unit, for example naphthalimide triazole (NT), and an AIE unit, for example triphenylethylene (TriPE). The compounds act as an effective AIEgen with ROS generating capabilities. The present combinations of an azole antibiotic unit and an AIE unit do not negatively affect the antibacterial properties of the azole. Accordingly, the present compounds exterminate bacteria with both the antibacterial mechanism of the azole along with the ROS produced when the AIE unit is exposed to light. In addition, the intrinsic imagining ability of the present compounds enables them to be used as imaging tools to monitor the drug-bacteria interaction. Collectively, the present compounds provide multiple functions including imaging, monitoring, and bacterial infection inhibition for integrated diagnosis and treatment in clinical practices.

Abstract: Provided is an antimicrobial coating material comprising one or more biocides encapsulated in inorganic-organic shells. The antimicrobial coating material can be applied on porous materials or porous media to form and antimicrobial coating without changing the physical properties and the functions of porous materials or porous media. The coating provides a durable, multi-level antimicrobial performance at high temperature through contact-killing, release-killing, anti-adhesion and self-cleaning. Also provided is a method of producing the antimicrobial coating material.

Abstract: The antimicrobial coating material for surface coating is formed from encapsulated biocides. The biocides include at least one antimicrobial component. The biocides are encapsulated in inorganic-organic shells which are permeable to the biocides. The organic materials may include at least one nonionic polymer. The inorganic-organic shells encapsulate and contain the biocides to form capsule structures for storage and release of the biocides. The capsule structures may be single capsules or capsule-in-capsule structures. The inorganic materials may be present in a concentration of 0.5-95 wt % of the inorganic-organic shells. Alternatively, the inorganic materials may be present in a concentration of 5-60 wt %. The inorganic materials and the organic materials are each intermixed, with respect to one another, in structures of the inorganic-organic shells. These structures may be an attachment structure, a hybrid structure or a multi-layered structure.

Abstract: Methods and formulations for antimicrobial and anti-biofouling coating comprising: a hollow round colloidal structure, comprising: an active polymer shell; and an active or inert core; wherein the active polymer shell comprises one and more polymers with antimicrobial and anti-biofouling activities selected from the group consisting of polyethylenimine (PEI), functionalized chitosan (CHI), polyquaternium, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMD); wherein the active or inert core contains one and more disinfectants, biocides, fragrances or inert solvent; and wherein the hollow round colloidal structure is stable for at least 3 months.
