Abstract: A first condition is set to such a condition of a fuel injection amount of a fuel injection valve and an opening degree of a throttle valve that an air excess ratio in a cylinder becomes greater than or equal to a prescribed value set as a value greater than 1.2 while satisfying a target output of an internal combustion engine. A second condition is set to such a condition of the fuel injection amount and the opening degree of the throttle valve that the air excess ratio in the cylinder becomes 1 or less while satisfying the target output of the internal combustion engine. A controller of the internal combustion engine is configured to obtain the first and second operating conditions that correspond to the target output, and select one of the operating conditions in accordance with the operating situation of the internal combustion engine.

The ENG-ECU performs a process of starting the specific cylinder fuel cutoff process in a combustion cycle when a waiting time which includes a time until the HV-ECU receives the engine operation information has elapsed after the transmission process has been performed.

Abstract: A controller executes a fuel introduction process when stopping combustion in a cylinder under a situation in which a crankshaft is rotating. The fuel introduction process causes a fuel injection valve to inject fuel and causes the fuel to flow out unburned from inside the cylinder to an exhaust passage. The opening degree of an exhaust gas recirculation valve at a point in time when a state in which the execution condition of the fuel introduction process is not satisfied is switched to a state in which the execution condition of the fuel introduction process is satisfied is a preliminary opening degree. During the execution of the fuel introduction process, the recirculation valve controlling section causes the opening degree of the exhaust gas recirculation valve to be smaller than the preliminary opening degree.

An injection reducing process causes a fuel injection amount in a reduced-injection cylinder to be smaller than a fuel injection amount in other cylinders. An increase limiting process limits increases in an adhered fuel amount in intake ports by regulating the port injection ratio during execution of the injection reducing process.
