In the related art, writing of BCA data has been performed by a BCA cutter or the like after a user data area was formed. However, according to such a method, individual steps cannot help being provided for a disc manufacturing step in order to form the BCA. A burden on the disc manufacturer is large from a viewpoint of the number of disc producing steps and, further, manufacturing costs. By using a bit forming method similar to a user data area, the BCA manufacturing steps can be reduced. Specifically speaking, by devising a pit depth, a pit width, and a pit pattern, a modulation degree of a BCA portion can be further increased. A detecting method similar to that for the BCA in the related art can be applied.

A scanning type projector for scanning an optical beam emitted from a laser light source has a collimator lens and a scanning device. A beam demagnifying and shaping prism is disposed between the collimator lens and the scanning device. The cross section of the beam that is elliptical is demagnified along the major axis of the ellipse such that the cross section of the beam is shaped. Thus, the cross section of the beam fits within the effective diameter of a deflecting mirror incorporated in the scanning device. The optical beam is reflected efficiently. A bright image can be projected. The resolution is improved by the beam shaping effect.

In the generation of a differential push-pull signal, an amplification factor K for sub push-pull signals is varied depending on the type of the optical disk. By such composition of the optical pickup, amplitude deterioration of the tracking error signal accompanying displacement of the object lens is reduced.

This pickup includes more than two different types of laser light sources, an objective lens for collecting and focusing any one of the laser beams leaving the light sources onto an optical disc, and an aberration correction device of the liquid crystal (LC) type, which is disposed between the light sources and the objective lens. The aberration corrector has a surface on which multiple spaced-apart electrodes are patterned for enabling aberration correction relative to incident beams. The corrector controls the potential of a voltage being applied to each electrode in deference to incident beam properties and variations occurrable thereto, e.g., wavelength, effective beam diameter and relative incidence position offsets, thereby to optimally correct beam aberrations, such as coma aberration or wavefront aberration. An optical information reproduction apparatus using the pickup is also disclosed.

An optical pickup has a semiconductor laser having two laser sources of different wavelengths disposed in the same package, one diffraction grating and one optical detector. A plurality of light reception areas each having four divisional light reception planes of a -character shape are disposed at positions where light beams reflected from an optical disc are applied. A focus error signal is generated by an astigmatism method by using independently these light reception areas and a tracking error signal is generated by a differential phase detection method by using one or both the light reception areas.

In an optical head, light from a semiconductor laser is directed through a condensing optical system with a condensing lens onto an optical information recording medium through a transparent substrate in the form of a light spot. A unit for producing a light spot position control signal and a unit able to move the light spot, which supports the objective lens for movement, position the light spot on an information track. Light reflected from the optical information recording medium is directed through a polarized light branching element to a photo detector. Also mounted for movement with the objective lens are a polarization conversion element, arranged between the optical information recording medium and the polarized light branching element in order to change the polarization state of light incident to the optical information recording medium and reflected therefrom and a polarization diffraction grating, the diffraction efficiency of which changes depending on the change in the polarization state of the incident light and the reflected light caused by the polarization conversion element. The light spot control signal is detected from both reflected light diffracted through the polarization diffraction grating and non-diffracted reflected light contained in the light which passes through the polarized light branching element.
