A stator includes a stator core and a plurality of coils. The stator core includes a core-back and a plurality of teeth portions. Each of the teeth portions includes a coil winding portion, a tip end portion, and an increased width portion. The tip end portion has a circumferential width larger than a smallest width of the coil winding portion. The increased width portion has a circumferential width larger than the smallest width of the coil winding portion. The increased width portion includes a slanted portion extending radially outward and upward. An axial position of a magnetic center of the rotor magnet positioned radially outward of the stator overlaps with an axially extending range of the tip end portion. A thickness of the slanted portion in a direction perpendicular to an upper surface of the slanted portion is smaller than an axial thickness of the coil winding portion.

A height of the rotor magnet as measured in an axial direction is preferably in a range of about 2 mm to about 3 mm (both inclusive), and a height of a stator core of the stator as measured in the axial direction is preferably in a range of about 50% to about 75% (both inclusive) of the height of the rotor magnet. A torque constant of a torque produced between the stator and the rotor magnet is in a range of about 3 mNm/A to about 5 mNm/A (both inclusive).

In a motor, a stationary portion includes a shaft portion and an upper thrust portion arranged to define a single continuous monolithic member together with the shaft portion, and arranged to extend radially outward from an upper portion of the shaft portion. The shaft portion includes a female screw portion recessed axially downward from an upper end thereof. An upper end of the single continuous monolithic member defined by the shaft portion and the upper thrust portion includes an upper end annular surface arranged to extend radially outward from the female screw portion perpendicularly or substantially perpendicularly to the central axis. An outside diameter of the upper end annular surface is greater than a diameter of an outer circumferential surface of the shaft portion.

A spindle motor includes a shaft arranged in an upward/downward direction along a central axis; a base member including a substantially cylindrical holder portion arranged around the central axis; a bearing unit arranged radially inward of the holder portion; and a rotating portion arranged above the base member to rotate about the central axis. The rotating portion preferably includes a mounting surface on which a disk is to be mounted. An adhesive containing an electrically conductive material and an adhesive containing an externally stimulated curing material and/or an anaerobic curing material are arranged in a clearance space defined between an inner circumferential surface of the holder portion and an outer circumferential surface of the bearing unit. The adhesive containing the electrically conductive material is arranged above the adhesive containing the externally stimulated curing material and/or the anaerobic curing material.

A spindle motor includes a shaft arranged concentric with as a central axis and extending in a vertical direction, a rotor unit arranged to rotate about the central axis, a stator including a base member and a magnetic member fixed to the base member and axially opposed to the magnet. The magnetic member includes an opposing portion axially opposed to the magnet so that a magnetic attracting force is generated between the opposing portion and the magnet and a protrusion portion protruding downwards from the opposing portion. The base member includes a recess portion, and the protrusion portion of the magnetic member is fixed within the recess portion.

A shaft, a circular plate portion and a cylindrical portion are integrally formed with one another through cutting operations to provide a rotor hub of a motor. An inner region on the lower surface of the circular plate portion is formed continuously with the outer peripheral surface of the shaft, and a hub thrust portion is provided in the inner portion so as to axially face a sleeve thrust portion on a sleeve main body. A stepped portion on the lower surface of the circular plate portion is disposed on the outer side of thrust dynamic pressure grooves on the sleeve thrust portion. In this manner, the stepped portion is disposed in a region where a thrust bearing portion is not provided, so that the hub thrust portion can be formed at a low cost in manufacturing the rotor hub by cutting.

In spindle motors journaled on fluid-dynamic-pressure bearings, especially in such spindle motors employed in recording-disk drives in implementations that subject the drives to vibration and shock, sealing performance of a capillary seal formed between motor rotor-side and stator-side bearing surfaces, cohesiveness of oil-repellant on rotor-side/stator-side dry-area surfaces adjoining the capillary seal section, and motor inter-component adhesive strength are improved. The capillary-seal-constituting rotor-side/stator-side surface(s) are exposed to a plasma or to ultraviolet rays under predetermined conditions to improve the wettability of the surface(s) for the bearing fluid. The dry-area surface(s) are similarly irradiated so as to improve their wettability for the oil-repellant. Adhesively bonded component surfaces are likewise irradiated so as to improve their wettability for the adhesive, enhancing adhesive strength. Exposed surfaces may be constituted of a synthetic resin to enhance their wettability further, or may be made of metal, to yield a cleaning efficacy from the plasma/UV exposure.
