A magnetic focusing type cathode ray tube comprising a magnetic focusing device positioned in front of a three beam in-line type cathode for focusing the electron beam emitted from the cathode. The magnetic focusing device is constructed of a magnetic yoke assembly having a pair of magnetic yoke members. Each magnetic yoke member has three cylindrical magnetic yoke portions through which an electron beam can pass, and one common cylindrical magnetic yoke portion having a larger diameter which completely surrounds the three electron beam passages. The cylindrical magnetic yoke portions of the yoke members are spaced equidistantly, facing each other in the electron beam passages.

These beams are generated practically parallel. In the deflection device that deflects the electron beams, the horizontal deflection magnetic field is made uniform and the vertical deflection magnetic field is made barrel shaped. The half-width a of the magnetic flux distribution on the tube axis of the horizontal deflection magnetic field is set so that a/A=0.1 to 0.4, where A is the distance from the center of the magnetic flux density distribution to the phosphor screen surface. It is arranged that the picture signals modulating the respective beams are not mutually time-wise offset since the three electron beams are parallel. Thus little electron beam spot distortion is obtained over the whole picture screen.

A color picture tube apparatus comprising a color picture tube and beam deflecting means surrounding the color picture tube. The color picture tube includes an in-line type electron gun and a phosphor screen with phosphor layers. Each phosphor layer emits red, green and blue light when the electron beams from the electron gun impinge upon it. The beam deflecting means includes a horizontal deflection coil for generating a horizontal deflection magnetic field, a vertical deflecting coil and correction coils. The vertical deflecting coil and the correction coils cooperate to generate a vertical deflection magnetic field. The distribution of the horizontal deflection magnetic field is barrel-shaped on the electron gun side and pincushion-shaped on the phosphor screen side and is, as a whole, pincushion-shaped. The distribution of the vertical deflection magnetic field is barrel-shaped on the electron gun side and pincushion-shaped on the phosphor screen side and is, as a whole, barrel-shaped. The correction coils serve to automatically correct both an image distortion and a convergence error at the same time.

The magnetic cylinders on the cathode side are so formed as to have a strong magnetic shield effect while the magnetic cylinders on the screen side are weak in magnetic shield effect. The radial components in the magnetic field produced in the magnetic gap, which act on the side beams in a direction perpendicular to an in-line direction, are reverse in polarity on the cathode side and screen side so that radial components emerge so as to converge the beams in a tube axis direction.

The asymmetrical distribution is determined as a function of the screen position on which electron beams deflected from the horizontal axis of the screen land. In a color picture device having a color picture tube, three electron guns for emitting electron beams are arranged in a neck section of the tube. A shadow mask, having a number of apertures, is arranged opposing a phosphor screen of a panel section of the tube. Convergence yokes for correcting misconvergence of the three electron beams are arranged around the neck section. A convergence electrode for converging the three electron beams over the entire screen is arranged in the neck section at the ends of the guns closer to the phosphor screen. The convergence electrode has three pairs of pole pieces each of which is formed of a magnetic substance with high permeability and is arranged in the neck section so as to surround the electron beam between the pole pieces. The length Wp of each pole piece along the tube axis is about two times or more the distance G between the pole pieces, and the length Wp is about twice the thickness Wy of the convergence yoke along the tube axis. Thus, the leakage flux from the pair of pole pieces along the tube axis is 20% or less of the total magnetic field generated by the convergence yoke.
