    摘要: The invention provides a method for fixing up the deterioration of a magneto-resistive effect device. A hard disk system is provided in it with a head heating means for heating a thin-film magnetic head, and by that head heating means, a defective site of the magneto-resistive effect device, which occurs as the hard disk system is in operation and is confined in a quasi-stable state, is fixed up in such a way as to return back to its own normal stable state. Thus, the deteriorated site of the magneto-resistive effect device (reproducing device) in the thin-film magnetic head, which is caused by the so-called thermal asperity as the hard disk system is in operation, is fixed up while it remains built in the hard disk system, i.e., without dismantling the hard disk system.

    摘要: The invention provides a method for fixing up the deterioration of a magneto-resistive effect device. A hard disk system is provided in it with a head heating means for heating a thin-film magnetic head, and by that head heating means, a defective site of the magneto-resistive effect device, which occurs as the hard disk system is in operation and is confined in a quasi-stable state, is fixed up in such a way as to return back to its own normal stable state. Thus, the deteriorated site of the magneto-resistive effect device (reproducing device) in the thin-film magnetic head, which is caused by the so-called thermal asperity as the hard disk system is in operation, is fixed up while it remains built in the hard disk system, i.e., without dismantling the hard disk system.

    摘要: The estimation method of the invention for estimating the deteriorations of a magneto-resistive effect device by heat shocks involves applying heat shocks by laser irradiation to a structure including a thin-film magnetic head comprising a magneto-resistive effect device to propagate them to the magneto-resistive effect device, thereby causing the deteriorations of the magneto-resistive effect device. Thus, (1) the deterioration mode phenomenon of “local overheating plus vibration” can be imitated in a simple yet very approximate state so that a device likely to undergo characteristics deteriorations due to the thermal asperity problem can be detected early at an initial fabrication process stage, and (2) what specifications a head device structure less likely to offer the thermal asperity problem is in can be judged at a product development stage.

The method includes a step of feeding through the MR read head element a sense current, a step of measuring non-signal output versus frequency characteristics of the MR read head element over a frequency range that covers at least FMR of the magnetization-fixed layer, and a step of discriminating whether the thin-film magnetic head is a head providing high-temperature noises by comparing a frequency of a peak of the non-signal output resulting from FMR of the magnetization-fixed layer with a threshold.

    摘要: A magnetic disk drive comprises a recording medium, a slider, and an alignment device for aligning the slider with respect to the medium. No film made of liquid lubricant is disposed on the surface of the medium. The slider incorporates: a slider main body including a thin-film magnetic head element disposed near a medium facing surface; and a protection film made of a tetrahedral amorphous carbon film for protecting the medium facing surface. The alignment device makes the slider retreat from the surface of the medium when the medium is stopped, and makes the slider face toward the surface of the medium when the medium is rotated. The magnetic disk drive further comprises a distance control device for controlling the distance between the medium and the thin-film magnetic head element.

    摘要: A magnetic head includes a reproducing element for reproducing information recorded on a magnetic recording medium, a recording element for recording information on the magnetic recording medium, and a heating resistor. The magnetic head has a magnetic medium-facing surface on which the reproducing element and the recording element are exposed.The magnetic head is obtained as follows: (1) a protective film is formed to cover the magnetic medium-facing surface; (2) within a case of a magnetic recording/reproducing apparatus including the magnetic recording medium, the magnetic medium-facing surface is opposed to a surface of the magnetic recording medium; (3) the heating resistor is allowed to generate heat by power supply while rotating the magnetic recording medium, wherein thermal expansion due to the heat generation causes bulging of the magnetic medium-facing surface, bringing the protective film into contact with the magnetic recording medium; and (4) a portion of the protective film covering at least one of the reproducing element and the recording element is removed by scraping.
