    摘要: A modular vane cam phaser assembly for controllably and continuously varying the rotational phase between a camshaft and the crankshaft of a reciprocating internal combustion engine. The module includes a housing mountable to the front of an engine head, the housing supporting on an outer surface thereof a programmably-controllable spool valve for directing pressurized oil to an oil commutator extending into both the housing and a vane phaser wherein a rotor is bolted to the camshaft and a stator is bolted to a timing sprocket. The oil is distributed by the spool valve to opposite sides of the rotor vanes in response to signals generated by an induction cam rotation sensor and by other engine components and processed by a powertrain control module to advance or retard the opening of intake and/or exhaust valves in the engine. The housing is provided with internal passages for supplying oil from an engine port to the spool valve. Preferably, the oil is filtered by a thimble screen as it enters the housing.

    摘要: An axially-compact camshaft phaser wherein the phaser bearing flange on the camshaft, connected to a timing chain sprocket or cam drive gear, is axially inverted in comparison to prior art cam phasers so that the bearing flange extends axially and inwardly of the phaser stator and rotor such that radial drive load on the phaser is sustained within the hydraulic portion of the phaser rather than externally thereof. The overall axial length of the phaser may be reduced thereby by about 25% relative to some prior art phasers and the Phaser Envelop volume may be reduced by 15% while maintaining an equivalent torque capacity.

    摘要: A vane-type camshaft phaser wherein a coil spring under torsional compression or extension is disposed coaxially within an annular cavity formed in either the cover plate or back plate. A first end of the spring is connected to the cover plate or back plate, and a second end extends from the cavity and is connected to the phaser rotor. The spring constant is selected such that a biasing torque is exerted on the rotor in the valve-opening-advancing direction which counters the inherent valve-opening-retarding torque bias of the camshaft during operation. The bias spring permits more rapid response to a demand on the cam phaser for advancing valve timing, and is also useful in orienting the camshaft advantageously, especially an exhaust valve camshaft, in a timing-advanced position when the engine is shut off or operating at low engine speed.

    摘要: A camshaft phaser is provided for varying the phase relationship between a crankshaft and a camshaft in an internal combustion engine. The camshaft phaser includes a stator having a plurality of lobes. A rotor is disposed within the stator and includes a plurality of vanes interspersed with the stator lobes to define alternating advance and retard chambers. A bushing adaptor of the camshaft phaser is disposable axially within a pocket of the camshaft and is disposed axially within the rotor. The bushing adaptor defines at least in part a supply passage for communicating pressurized oil from the internal combustion engine to a control valve, an advance passage for selectively communicating pressurized oil from the control valve to the advance chambers, and a retard passage for selectively communicating pressurized oil from the control valve to the retard chambers.

    摘要: A C-clip retainer is provided in a groove of a piston, such as for an engine hydraulic valve lash adjuster, to allow installation and removably retain the piston in a cylinder of an associated assembly. The groove has a novel shape including an inner surface that is angled relative to a longitudinal axis of the piston to provide a larger groove diameter at a first axial end surface and a smaller diameter at an opposite second axial end surface of the groove. Upon installation, the clip is urged into the smaller diameter, allowing easier installation, but upon removal the clip is expanded by forcing it to the larger diameter, thereby increasing the retention force on the piston. The first axial end surface may also be formed with a back angle that reduces forces of the associated cylinder edge that tend to compress the retainer into the groove, thus further increasing the piston retention force.

    摘要: Internal combustion engine variable valve timing control with a camshaft phaser for varying rotational phase between a camshaft and a crankshaft in response to a control command determined through a hybrid control strategy without resort to direct temperature measurement. For a range of phase errors requiring high response compensation, a control strategy emphasizing rapid response, such as a bang-bang strategy, is deployed. For a range of phase errors requiring high accuracy compensation, a control strategy emphasizing high precision, such as a proportional-plus-integral strategy, is deployed. The phase error ranges are updated periodically to account for changes in operating conditions. The control command includes an offset which varies in response to a periodically estimated control deadband to affirmatively account for the deadband with each issued control command.
