Abstract: Various embodiments of the teachings herein include a method for controlling a cam using an ECU (electronic control unit) comprising: learning a holding region in which linearity is not ensured by increasing or decreasing a PWM signal while the cam maintains a holding state; based on the results of the learning, generating a final PWM signal; and transmitting the final PWM signal to an oil control valve. The final PWM signal comprises a sum of a minimum PWM signal for the cam to leave the holding region and a control PWM signal for the cam to reach a desired position.

Abstract: The disclosure relates to a camshaft adjustment system comprising a hydraulic camshaft adjuster having a stator and a rotor forming at least one working chamber. The at least one working chamber is divided into a first sub-chamber and a second sub-chamber. The sub-chambers interact with a control valve controllable via a first actuator. When the first sub-chamber undergoes a volume increase, the rotor is displaced into a late position relative to the stator, and when the second sub-chamber undergoes a volume increase, the rotor is displaced into an early position relative to the stator. A second actuator actuated independently of the first actuator is provided. In order to release the camshaft adjuster from the late position when in an operating state, a ram of the second actuator displaces a locking pin of a late-locking device of the camshaft adjuster out of its position that locks the late position.

Abstract: An exhaust system includes a plurality of cylinders, and each cylinder includes a scavenge exhaust valve and a blowdown exhaust valve. A scavenge path leads from the scavenge exhaust valves and a blowdown path leads from the blowdown exhaust valves. An arrangement activates and deactivates the scavenge exhaust valves and the blowdown exhaust valves. Further included is a cam shaft including a plurality of scavenge cams and a plurality of blowdown cams. During rotation of the cam shaft, the scavenge cams interact with the scavenge exhaust valves to open and close the scavenge exhaust valves when the scavenge exhaust valves are activated. Additionally, during rotation of the cam shaft, the blowdown cams interact with the blowdown exhaust valves to open and close the blowdown exhaust valves when the blowdown exhaust valves are activated, and at different times with respect to the opening and closing of the scavenge exhaust valves.

Abstract: A method, control system, and variable valve timing system are provided for controlling an actuator that can be switched into an on state and an off state with pulse width modulation. The systems and method include controls configured to determine an actual system parameter on a first time schedule and a desired system parameter on a second time schedule. On a third time schedule, a position error difference between the actual system parameter and the desired system parameter is determined. The third time schedule is configured to begin and to determine the position error difference each time that the actual system parameter is determined and each time that the desired system parameter is determined. A desired duty cycle is determined, and a duty cycle command is sent to a pulse width modulation output unit.
