    摘要: A bedding foundation box spring having novel double twist coil springs interconnecting a wooden base frame and a top wire grid. The coil springs each comprise a single length of wire having a middle section located in a diametral plane of one end convolution of the spring and a pair of spring arms coiled in the same rotational direction from opposite ends of the middle section. Each of the spring arms is formed into a helix of varying pitch which terminates in a free end of the spring arm. The free ends of the two spring arms of each coil are located on opposite sides of the end convolution of the coil and are secured to the wire grid. The novel coils are manufactured by inserting a straight length of wire through a stationary pair of forming dies and a mandrel located between the dies. With the middle of the straight length of wire located in the mandrel, the mandrel is then simultaneously rotated and moved axially while the ends of the length of wire are pulled through the stationary forming dies.

The wire grid is hingedly supported upon the frame for movement between a collapsed position and an erect position. The hinged connection between the wire grid and the base frame is achieved by a plurality of transverse spaced, parallel planar support elements pivotally connected to the base frame and the wire grid. The foundation is supported in an erect position solely by a pair of longitudinally extending, parallel planar support elements pivotally connected to the longitudinal edge of the wire grid and, when the foundation is erect, fixedly secured to the base frame.

The springs are maintaned in a compressed configuration while a longitudinal seam (54) joins the free edges of the thermally welded fabric (16) together. Subsequently, the compressed springs (14) are allowed to relax into an expanded configuration after which a transverse seam (80) is formed in the fabric (16) between the adjacent springs (14) thereby encapsulating each spring (14) within a fabric pocket (86). The string (12) of pocketed coil springs (14) is advantageously formed without the need for reorienting the springs (14) after being inserted between the plies (24,26) of the fabric (16) and thereby avoiding the disadvantages and complications associated with turning or reorienting the pocketed coil spring (14).

    摘要: An innerspring structure for a mattress comprises a plurality of outer coils extending generally parallel with each other to collectively form top and bottom face surfaces of the innerspring structure. One or more of the outer coils has an inner coil of preferably similar shape positioned generally coaxially with the respective outer coil. In one embodiment, a helical lacing wire wraps together adjacent end turns of the inner and outer coaxially aligned coils to form reinforced coil units in an area of the innerspring structure to increase the firmness of an area of the mattress utilizing the invention. Helical lacing wire connects the coils of the structure together and connects the end turns of peripheral coils to a border wire surrounding the periphery of the structures at the top and bottom face surfaces. In another embodiment of the invention, the structure comprises a row of inner coils and a row of outer coils, each formed from a single continuous piece of wire such that adjacent coils of the row are interconnected by interconnection segments. The rows of coils are positioned together so that the inner coils are coaxial with the outer coils to form reinforced coil unit.

    摘要: A spring interior assembly method and apparatus produces spring interiors formed of a plurality of longitudinally connected columns of spring coils. Preferably, the spring interiors are formed as continuous wire bands each of alternating coils and bridging sections. Corresponding, coils of each column are laced together with transverse lacing wires as the columns are indexed longitudinally through a lacing station and are adjusted to correct lengths as the spring interiors are assembled. A measurement device or other form of sensor at a measurement station downstream of the lacing station in the assembly machine signals the length of a portion of the spring interior, preferably including a number of bridging sections. A processor in the assembly machine controller causes the last laced section to be longitudinally deformed to adjust its length in response to the measurement. Preferably, a plurality of measurements and the adjustments are stored and analyzed by the processor which adjusts the correction response based on the analysis. The adjustment may be made to only stretch the interconnected columns of coils, and do so by only a fixed amount, when the measured length is shorter than a predetermined minimum, with no adjustment being otherwise made.

A mattress inclining mechanism is provided for selectively moving the mattress from a generally horizontal orientation used for mattress conveying and flipping operations to an inclined orientation used during sewing to gravity feed the mattress into engagement with the sewing machine.
