An optical lighting apparatus having a constant luminance with a drive current controlled by a controller unit. A temperature controlled photodetector indirectly monitors the luminance and informs the controller when a change in luminance has occurred so that the controller can make appropriate adjustments to the drive current. Also disclosed is a method of regulating the drive current to a light source to enable the luminance to remain fixed and independent of fluctuations in ambient temperature. A temperature compensated photodetector senses the amount of light reflected off a diffuser lens and feeds back the output to a controller circuit which regulates the drive current to the light source. The lighting apparatus has application in calibrating imaging systems, such as digital cameras, and for scanning devices.

A system and a method are provided for correcting the effect of non-uniform illumination on a reproduced image of a 2-D object. An image of a reference card in an illuminated setting is captured by an image capturing device. A 2-D object is placed in the same illuminated setting and the image of the object is captured. Next, a smoothing function for the reference card image is generated. The smoothing function is used to generate a smoothed reference card image. The smoothed reference card image is processed to compute inverse correction values, which are mathematical inverse of the pixel values in the smoothed reference card image. A pixel-by-pixel correction is then applied to the captured image of the 2-D object using the inverse correction values.

The image sensor has an active area with a matrix of camera pixels. The color filter array is in optical alignment over the matrix of the camera pixels. The color filter array assigns alternating single colors to each camera pixel. The image processor receives the camera pixels and includes a correlation detector to detect spatial correlation of color information between pairs of colors in the pixel data captured by the camera pixels. The correlation detector further controls demosaicing of the camera pixels into full color pixels with improved resolution. The apparatus may further include demosaicing logic to demosaic the camera pixels into the full color pixels with improved resolution in response to the spatial correlation of the color information between pairs of colors.
