In order to prevent excessive voltages originating in customer owned terminal equipment from creating a hazardous condition in an associated telephone line, a protective circuit is connected between the equipment and the line. This circuit responds to an unbalanced current flow by disconnecting the equipment from the line and providing a local path to ground for the current. The circuit remains activated as long as the unbalanced current flow continues and reconnects the equipment to the line only when the current flow ceases.

An electronic thermostat circuit has improved power stealing for controlling an AC control device. The circuit comprises a source of AC control power coupled to an electronic switch means having an electronic switch means control input. The electronic switch means controls the AC control device. The diode bridge controls the electronic switch means by a DC control signal applied to the diode bridge means DC connection. The amplifier means has an amplifier input for controlling the state of the amplifier and an amplifier output for generating the DC control signal. An isolated gate FET means is electrically coupled to the amplifier input for controlling the state of the amplifier. The isolated gate FET means is powered by the current derived from the source of AC control power by power stealing. The digital signal controls the state of the AC control.

A telephone line-powered power supply, a method of operating the same and telephone line-powered ancillary equipment. In one embodiment, the power supply includes: (1) a transformer having a primary winding and a secondary winding and (2) an energy storage device (which may, but is not required to, be a capacitor) series-coupled to the primary winding, the primary winding and the energy storage device adapted to be coupled to, and provide a terminating resistance for, a telephone line. A node between the primary winding and the energy storage device provides DC power. Another embodiment employs a control switch to regulate an energy storage device, thereby dispensing with a need for the transformer.

An auxiliary baseband telephone instrument interface is provided in an answering machine to which any auxiliary telephone instrument, whether corded or cordless, can be connected and can control the answering machine functionality by use of in-band control signals. More specifically, a controllable switch arrangement is employed to connect outputs of an auxiliary instrument jack to outputs of a telephone line jack to which the answering machine is connected, or to the answering machine functionality itself and to disconnect the outputs of the auxiliary jack from the outputs of the telephone line jack or the answering machine functionality. Use of unidirectional paths controlled by a plurality of switching elements allows the user of an auxiliary telephone instrument connected to the auxiliary instrument jack to privately screen incoming calls on a telephone line connected to the telephone line jack, which the answering machine has answered and to controllably access other remote features of the answering machine. During the private screening of a call, a user of the auxiliary telephone instrument can interrupt the answering machine operations by entering an in-band control signal and thereby intercept the answered call. Additionally, use of the controllable switch array enables a user of the auxiliary telephone instrument to answer incoming calls, if desired, or to make outgoing calls, if desired.

A multiplexed data channel telephone system comprising a master station (221) and one or more remote stations (222) is disclosed. Each station (221, 222) is bridged, in a parallel electrical connection, onto a wire-pair (201) that extends from the stations to a telephone switching system. Each station (221, 222) includes a voiceband line interface (110, 310) for connecting to the wire-pair (201) at voiceband frequencies, and a radio frequency line interface (700, 800) for connecting to the wire-pair (201) at radio frequencies. Each station further includes multiplexer and demultiplexer equipment (500, 600) for frequency shifting a data channel between baseband and rf. Amplitude modulation and half-duplex transmission are used in the data channel. Telephone status and control information, including ringing and answer control, are exchanged between controllers (160, 360) via the data channel. Remote stations (222) minimize the amount of equipment required by using the data channel to control common equipment at the master station (221) that interacts with incoming telephone lines (201, 202).
