    Abstract: Belted pneumatic tires characterized by improved treadreinforcing breaker constructions are disclosed. In any such breaker, a single-section plural-layer non-metallic textile cord ply structure having the cords thereof oriented at a 0* angle to the median equatorial plane of the tire is combined with a plural-layer ply structure of metallic wires or strips which in each layer are crossed relative to those in the other layer and are oriented at a substantial bias angle, preferably between about 18* and 75*, to the said plane. The plural-layer textile cord ply structure, which may be located radially outwardly or inwardly of the metal ply structure or between the layers thereof, is constituted by a single length of breaker cord fabric wound in a continuous spiral circumferentially of the carcass for at least a plurality of full turns and is considerably narrower than the metal ply structure. Such tires are found to be possessed of good road-holding or cornering ability while affording good riding comfort. This abstract is not to be taken either as a complete exposition or as a limitation of the present invention, however, the full nature and extent of the invention being discernible only by reference to and from the entire disclosure.

    Abstract: Radial ply pneumatic tires capable of being run at very high speeds are disclosed. Such tires are characterized by a treadreinforcing breaker having a plural-layer non-metallic textile cord ply structure wider than the tread, with the cords oriented at a O* angle to the median equatorial plane, and a single-layer ply structure, narrower than the tread, of metallic wires or strips oriented at a substantial bias angle, preferably between about 20* and 45*, to the said plane. The plural-layer ply structure is constituted by a single length of breaker cord fabric wound in a continuous spiral circumferentially of the carcass for at least a plurality of full turns. If the metal ply structure in such a tire is superposed onto the textile ply structure, the tire is additionally provided with means indicating the manner in which it should be mounted on a vehicle so as to have a specified direction of rotation during normal high speed forward movement of the vehicle.

    Abstract: Radial ply tires having good vertical flexibility as well as lateral stability even at high speeds are disclosed. The tires are characterized by a sidewall construction in which a radially inward zone in at least one sidewall is reinforced only by the ply structure of the radial carcass itself, and the respective adjacent radially outwardmost sidewall zone contiguous with the tread region of the tire is additionally reinforced by a supplementary ply structure of the carcass extending from the breaker region into the sidewall. In a preferred embodiment, the supplementary ply structure comprises sheet material folded back upon itself, with the folded edge defining the boundary between said sidewall zones. As a refinement of the invention, the respective adjacent radially inwardmost zone of the same sidewall contiguous with the associated bead region is also additionally reinforced by an extended bead turnup section folded back upon itself. The resultant intermediate sidewall zone of limited reinforcement, bounded by the proximate edges of the additional reinforcing plies in the two other zones, is of considerably reduced width with respect to the normal width of a sidewall between the proximate edges of the standard breaker and bead turnup, whereby the tire is somewhat rigidified but retains an optimum degree of flexibility. The sidewall region corresponding to the intermediate zone may also be reduced in thickness.
