LOW DENSITY ALUMINA SPHERES OF IMPROVED CRUSHING STRENGTH ARE PREPARED BY THE OIL-DROP METHOD UTILIZING A DROPPING MIXTURE COMPRISING AN ALUMINA SOL AND HEXAMETHYLENETETRAMINE, SAID DROPPING MIXTURE HAVING AN A1/C1 WEIGHT RATIO OF 1:1 TO 1.5:1, A HEXMETHYLENETETRAMINE/C1 MOL RATIO OF 1/4-1.25/4 AND AN A1 CONTENT OF 6-10 WT. PERCENT. AFTER DROPPING, THE SPHERES ARE PRESSSURE AGED AT A TEMPERATURE OF 240*-500*F. FOR 1-5 HOURS, AND ARE THEN WASHED, DRIED AND CALCINED.
