The present invention relates to a system to detect mercaptides or sulfides in a caustic stream. More particularly, this invention relates to an on-line analyzer for measuring mercaptides using a color changing reagent to quantify mercaptide or sulfide concentration in a caustic stream. The on-line analyzer which includes a liquid sensor which can provide valuable feedback to an operator for controlling a processing unit for the catalytic oxidation of mercaptides to disulfides in an alkaline environment.

One exemplary embodiment can be a process for oxidizing one or more thiol compounds from an alkaline stream. The process may include passing a mixed stream having the alkaline stream to a vessel having an oxidation section, a separation section and a vent gas section. Often, the oxidation section includes a body containing one or more packing elements. The process can further include passing an oxidized alkaline stream to the separation section containing a first chamber and a second chamber. Usually, the first chamber contains a coated mesh and packing. The two sections further form a neck contains a packing, a distributor, and a mesh.

A process and apparatus for sweetening a hydrocarbon stream. The apparatus includes two vessels. In a first extraction vessel, caustic removes mercaptans from the hydrocarbon stream. In a second oxidation vessel, the mercaptans in the rich caustic are converted in disulfides. The lean caustic and disulfides are passed back to the first extraction vessel in which the disulfides are separated into the sweetened hydrocarbon phase. The second vessel may receive a wash oil, such as the sweetened hydrocarbon phase, to remove disulfides from a vented gas stream.

A method and apparatus for removing carbonyl sulfide (COS) from a hydrocarbon stream have been developed. The design allows removal of COS in the regeneration stream to less than 10 wppm, even at high concentrations of COS. The spent bed is regenerated using a portion of the treated product stream. The COS regeneration column provides increased contact and residence time.

Processes and apparatuses for removing mercaptans from feed streams are provided. In one embodiment, a process for removing mercaptans from a feed stream includes extracting mercaptans and a polymeric precursor from the feed stream with a caustic solvent to form a polymeric precursor rich spent caustic solvent. The polymeric precursor rich spent caustic solvent is contacted with a polymeric precursor-deficient hydrocarbon stream in a multistage vessel and the polymeric precursor is extracted from the polymeric precursor rich spent caustic solvent to form a treated spent caustic solvent. The process contacts the treated spent caustic solvent with oxygen and oxidizes the mercaptans to disulfides to form an oxidized caustic solvent stream. The process includes separating the oxidized caustic solvent stream into an offgas stream, a disulfide stream, and a caustic solvent stream.

The pressurized alkaline stream and a sulfur lean liquid light hydrocarbon stream are introduced to a high pressure disulfide separation vessel to form a sulfur lean alkaline stream and a sulfur rich liquid light hydrocarbon stream.
