Abstract: A process comprising creating an immiscible mixture by combining (a) a hydrocarbon feedstock containing contaminants and (b) a wash water, to create the immiscible mixture with at least three distinct layers: a hydrocarbon layer, a rag layer, and a brine layer. In this process a portion of the contaminants are removed from the hydrocarbon mixture where are then transferred to the brine layer. The brine layer is then separated from the immiscible mixture. In this process an alkalinity modifier is added in the process to reduce the emulsions in the immiscible mixture to create the at least three distinct layers.

Abstract: Methods for upgrading a bio-oil are described. The methods utilize gaseous ammonia to react with one or more components of a bio-oil and thereby upgrade the bio-oil and separate the resulting mixture into organic and aqueous phases. Both the aqueous phase and the organic phase produced by the process can contain useful species such as ammonium species and an organic phase with increased energy content as compared to the bio-oil.

Abstract: A process for the removal of residual sulfur compounds from rich liquid caustic is disclosed where a single column containing two reaction zones catalytically oxidizes mercaptans to disulfide oils. The second reaction zone utilizes a bundle of vertical hanging fibers and is maintained as a gas continuous phase comprising from about 20% to about 100% by volume vapor. This process is especially useful as part of a hydrocarbon desulfurization process flow scheme.

Abstract: A process for reducing TAN of hydrocarbon feed oil, comprising: a. combining alkaline earth metal, in an aqueous solution having a pH of 10 to 14, with the hydrocarbon feed oil to make a mixture; b. vigorously mixing the mixture; c. precipitating a metal-naphthenate salt; and d. removing the metal-naphthenate salt to reduce the TAN by 50 to 100%; wherein a weight ratio of the hydrocarbon feed oil to the aqueous solution is from 0.25:1 to 20:1. Also, a process for reducing TAN, comprising: a. combining an inorganic alkaline earth metal salt having a water solubility at 20° C. from 35 to 150 g/100 g water, in an aqueous solution having a pH of 10 to 14, to make a mixture; b. precipitating a metal-naphthenate salt; c. collecting the metal-naphthenate salt at an interface between an oil phase and an aqueous phase; and d. removing the metal-naphthenate salt.

Abstract: A system and method for cleaning sulfur and other pollutants from bunker oil to be used for fuel in large cargo ships is described. Preferably, the system includes two or more stages having a mixer to create an emulsion of oil and water. One or more treatment chemicals are added to the water before it is mixed with the oil in order to assist in separating the sulfur from the oil and freeing it up so that it can combine with various other molecules present in the water or be dissolved in the water. The emulsion may pass through a microcavitation chamber as well as an electrolysis reactor chamber in order to further clean the fuel oil by removing additional sulfur content. The clean fuel is sent to a fuel service tank for use in a diesel engine combustion cycle.

Abstract: Treatment compositions for neutralizing acidic species and reducing hydrochloride and amine salts in a fluid hydrocarbon stream are disclosed. The treatment compositions may comprise at least one amine with a salt precipitation potential index of equal to or less than about 1.0. Methods for neutralizing acidic species and reducing deposits of hydrochloride and amine salts in a hydrocarbon refining process are also disclosed. The methods may comprise providing a fluid hydrocarbon stream and adding a treatment composition to the fluid hydrocarbon stream. The treatment compositions used may have a salt precipitation potential index of equal to or less than about 1.0 and comprise either water-soluble or oil-soluble amines.

Abstract: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and/or mercaptan scavengers are chemicals that remove H2S and/or mercaptans from gas, oil and water. Water-based formulations may be made and used employing scavenging compounds having the formulae: wherein each R1, R2, R3, and R4 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, an alkyl, an alkenyl, an aryl, an acyl, a halogen, a hydroxyl, a nitro, an alkyl ester, an aryl ester, an alkyl ether, an aryl ether, a hydroxymethyl, an anhydride group, an amino, and a sulfide. In one non-limiting embodiment the compounds (A) and (B) do not contain nitrogen atoms. Water-based formulations, such as those using a protic solvent with the above compounds, work well as H2S scavengers.

Abstract: Methods for converting motor oil into fuel generally include forming a conversion mixture of an alcohol and a base, and adding the conversion mixture to motor oil, to form a reaction mixture. The methods can also include adding a high nitrate compound and an amino acid to the reaction mixture and ozonizing the reaction mixture. The result of the methods can include a three phase system in which the bottom phase is asphalt oil, the middle phase is diesel fuel or jet fuel, and the top phase is sulfuric acid. The three phases can be separated to obtain the final diesel fuel or jet fuel product.
