The encoder element includes at least one first track that includes a material providing a magnetic pattern along the first direction, the magnetic pattern being formed by a remanent magnetization vector that has a variable magnitude dependent on a position along the first direction. The gradient of the remanent magnetization vector is such that a resulting magnetic field in a corridor above the first track and at a predefined distance above the plane includes a field component perpendicular to the first direction that does not change its sign along the first direction.

A method for determining the angular position of a rotating object and rotary encoder is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method includes a method for determining the angular position of an object rotating about a rotation axis in a rotation direction and having a coding pattern, using a sensor that senses the coding pattern, including ascertaining the coarse angular position of the rotating object with respect to the sensor whilst taking account of the coding pattern at a first instant. The exact angular position of the rotating object is ascertained with respect to the sensor whilst taking account of the coarsely ascertained angular position and also whilst taking account of at least one section of the coding pattern which extends counter to the rotation direction proceeding from that location of the coding pattern which is assigned to the coarse angular position. An output signal is provided containing items of information about the exact angular position of the rotating object with respect to the sensor.

The invention is direct to a comparator circuit that maps an analog input signal into a digital output signal and comprises a threshold as well as an upper and a lower hysteresis threshold. Given transgression of the upper or lower hysteresis threshold by the analog input signal, at least one unlatch signal is formed that enables the switching of the digital output signal when the analog input signal upwardly transgresses the threshold. Independently of at least one unlatch signal, the digital output signal is inventively switched when the analog input signal transgresses the upper or lower hysteresis threshold.
