Abstract: An oscillating scanner including a mechanism for oscillating a mirror at large amplitudes of, for example, plus and minus one radian. A spiral spring is connected at one end to a driven support body for the mirror and at the other end to a counterbalance body. The driven and counterbalance bodies are concentrically mounted by bearings for oscillation upon a foundation mounted shaft. Drive means, situated in a mechanically parallel relationship with the spring, supplies energy in a cyclic manner to the system for maintaining a constant oscillation amplitude by replacing energy losses. The oscillating scanner further includes an iris diaphragm with a controlled opening to suit the viewing requirements over the range of viewing angles.

Abstract: A lightweight reflector construction suitable for use in space, having a thin flexible reflector membrane means stretched flat between the projecting ends of a plurality of arms which extend axially and radially from a central support member about which such arms are distributed. The arms accept the reflector membrane tensioning load in compression along their length and are permitted to be of relatively slender construction by virtue of a rigidizing system of guys that constrain the arms against buckling at spaced apart locations along their length.

Abstract: A bearingless scanner having a mirror supported for oscillations with simple harmonic motion at resonance by pairs of spiral springs arranged at opposite sides of the mirror. The springs of each pair are attached at points spaced 180* apart between the mirror structure and a foundation such that the force couples produced by each pair of springs are equal and opposite. A torsion spring supports the mirror structure along the axis of the oscillating motion. A drive system without bearings supplies torque in resonance with the harmonic motion and in a manner without producing residual forces on the structure for the scanner.
