摘要: A system and method for continual cable thermal monitoring using cable characteristic considerations in Power over Ethernet (PoE) applications. Cable heating in PoE applications is detected through changes in electrical characteristics of the cable itself. By periodically monitoring the electrical characteristics such as insertion loss or cross talk of the cable, it can be determined whether the cable has exceeded certain thermal operating thresholds.

摘要: Aspects of a method and system for Ethernet Switching, Conversion, and PHY optimization based on link length in Audio/Video Systems are provided. In this regard, the length of a link over which a first communication device communicates with a second communication device may be determined and Ethernet PHY's residing in the communication devices may be configured based on the determination. One or both of the communication devices may comprise an Ethernet switch operable to switch packetized audio and/or video content. The packetized audio and/or video may be switched between the configured Ethernet PHY and one or more other Ethernet PHYs. Audio and/or video data may be received via the one or more corresponding Ethernet PHYs, the received audio and/or video data may be reformatted to be compatible with an audio and/or video interface, and the reformatted audio and/or video data may be transmitted via the audio and/or video interface.

摘要: Ethernet link partners coupled via an Ethernet link that comprises a plurality of channels are operable to transmit and receive at different maximum data rates on different channels. Based on link conditions, a link partner may negotiate a transmission rate and/or accept or reject a reception rate. Based on link conditions, a first link partner is configured to communicate in simplex mode at a first rate via at least one channel and receive in simplex mode at a second rate via at least one channel. The configured data rates are less than or equal to the respective maximum rates or a rate of zero. Link conditions comprise link load or utilization, current or past conditions, PER, BER and SNR. Power may be lowered for transmitters, receivers, near-end and/or far end cross talk cancellers, hybrids, echo cancellers and other components. Channels may be transitioned from duplex mode to simplex.

摘要: An Ethernet link may comprise one or more link partners that may be communicatively coupled via one or more silent channels. One or more circuits and/or parameters corresponding to silent channels may be retrained, refreshed and/or updated based on various triggers, for example, fixed times, periodic or aperiodic time intervals, random or pseudorandom timer, events, link statistics, physical conditions such as noise, temperature level, cable type and/or cable length, communication from a corresponding link partner and/or based on programming from, for example, a layer above the physical layer. The retraining, refreshing and/or parameter updating may occur for one or more of an echo canceller, a far-end crosstalk canceller and a near-end crosstalk canceller corresponding to the one or more silent channels. Subsequent to the retraining, refreshing and/or parameter updating, the one or more silent channels may be activated and/or may remain silent.

摘要: A system and method for using a link energy signal in physical layer devices (PHYs) having a silent channel/interface in energy efficient Ethernet (EEE). LPI modes in EEE suffer deficiencies in cable unplug detection due to the latency in refresh cycles. LPI modes in EEE also suffer from potential frequency drift, which leads to high bit error rate (BER) when coming out of LPI mode. A link energy signal transmitted during LPI modes enables real-time detection of cable unplug and the frequency lock to be maintained.

摘要: Signals may be communicated with A/V Bridging services between an upstream link partner and a down stream link partner, each comprising an asymmetric multi-rate Ethernet physical layer (PHY). High bandwidth A/V signals may be transmitted from the upstream link partner and low bandwidth signals may be transmitted from the downstream link partner. One or more of a time stamp, a traffic class and/or a destination address may be utilized in generating PDUs as well as data rate request and a resource reservation messages via the asymmetric Ethernet PHY. The receiving link partner may register for deliver of the PDUs. An aggregate communication rate may be distributed evenly or unevenly among one or more links for transmission and aggregated upon reception via asymmetric multi-rate Ethernet PHY operations. Compressed, uncompressed, encrypted and/or unencrypted signals may be handled. Signal processing may comprise echo cancellation, cross talk cancellation, forward error checking and equalization.

摘要: A system and method for forming N0GBASE-T. In one embodiment, N 10GBASE-T PHYs are matched to a N×10G MAC via a shim layer. The shim layer is designed to distribute data received from a higher rate MAC to multiple lower-rate PHYs on the transmit end, and to collect data received from multiple lower-rate PHYs to a higher rate MAC.
