A pressure device for applying pressure to a web-like image-receiving material, such as a continuous paper web in the transfer station of a non-mechanical printer or copier, has a C-shaped pressure bar which extends over the width of the image-receiving material and is open on a side adjacent to the image-receiving material and which is pivotable about a point disposed above the pressure bar, and a solenoid having a movable plunger which is connected via a linkage to a pin carried on the rear of the pressure plate such that when the solenoid is in a normal rest condition the pressure bar is forced against the image-receiving material such that the image-receiving material presses against the surface of a rotating intermediate image carrier having an electrostatically held toner image thereon for transferring the image to the image-receiving material. When the solenoid is actuated, the plunger retracts thereby pulling the pressure bar away from the image-receiving material by rotating the pressure bar about its pivot point. The pressure bar may also include an eccentric disc having a pin engaging the linkage so that the movement of the pressure bar is retarded as the pressure bar moves toward or away from the image-receiving material.

The sensor is an optical sensor or a capacitive sensor, and the charge applied to the toner by the charging device is varied depending on the sensor output. In a developer station for an electrophotographic printing or copying machine, there is provided a developer drum apparatus for producing optimum inking density and resolution of the charge images being passed through the developer station on a charge image carrier. The apparatus comprises a rotating hollow cylinder within which is contained a stationary magnet arrangement in the form of a series of rows of permanent magnets, each row being disposed longitudinally with the cylinder, supported on a stator carrier. The first row of magnets is disposed adjacent the lower end of the cylinder for attracting developer mix particles from the floor of the developer station housing and the succeeding rows of magnets are disposed along the transport path of particles on the cylinder to promote transport of the mix upwardly on the cylinder to an inking gap area with the charge image carrier. A final row of relatively wider magnets is disposed at the upper end of the cylinder with its longitudinal centerline substantially offset from the inking gap to promote uniform distribution of the mix along the length of the cylinder just prior to inking. The layer amount of developer mix carried by the rotating cylinder is set by an adjustable doctoring strip disposed beneath the first magnet row and a narrow transport channel defined between the cylinder and a housing wall along the mix transport path.

Both web sections are drawn along a path past the intermediate medium by a transport system. During the printing process, a tensioning device biases the first and second web sections against the intermediate medium. A web-tensioning unit located downstream relative to the direction of transport of the transport device, applies a traction force to the web sections in the direction of travel. In addition, a first compensation device and a second compensation device separated from the first compensation device are provided between the transport device and tensioning device. The compensation devices bias the first or second web sections as appropriate, against the direction of transport during the printing process.
