An indicator and ejector assembly has a visually readable indicia which changes from red to green as the tongue and buckle members are interconnected. As the tongue and buckle members are disconnected, the indicia changes from green back to red. The indicia is disposed on an indicator member which transmits force to eject the tongue member at least partially from the buckle member as the tongue and buckle members are disconnected.

A manifold (16) is provided for directing the output of the airbag inflator (18) into the airbag (12), and a reaction canister (22) houses the airbag (12), the airbag inflator (18), and the manifold (16). A deflagration device (40) is provided for selectively venting the airbag module (10). The deflagration device (40) may be activated for creating at least one variable shaped vent (50, 52) for regulating output from the airbag inflator (18) and adaptively changing the deployment force of the airbag (12).

An improved safety apparatus (10) is used in association with a belt (16) which restrains movement of an occupant of a vehicle. The belt (16) is taken up by and paid out from a retractor assembly (22). Upon the occurrence of vehicle deceleration greater than a predetermined deceleration, a solenoid assembly (132) operates a clamp assembly (28) to grip the belt (16) and prevent paying out of the belt. In one embodiment of the invention, the retractor assembly (22) includes a sensor assembly (54) which operates a retainer assembly (56) to prevent withdrawal of the belt from the retractor assembly when the deceleration of the vehicle is in excess of a predetermined deceleration. The sensor assembly (54) is mounted on a movable carriage (32) in the retractor assembly (22). Although the clamp assembly (28) and the retractor assembly (22) may be used in many different locations in a vehicle, they are advantageously located on the back (24) of a vehicle seat (12).

A multiple function control stalk for a vehicle having a pivotable headlight dimmer switch therein is disclosed. The control stalk can house a plurality of electrical switches for controlling various devices within the vehicle, such as windshield wiper and washer controls and vehicle speed or cruise controls. The control stalk is pivotally connected to a turn signal lever of the vehicle such that it can be pivoted toward the driver in a plane of movement which is generally perpendicular to the plane defined by the plane of movement of the turn signal lever itself. A two position electrical switch is provided within the control stalk. The switch includes a plunger which is engaged by pivoting movement of the control stalk relative to the turn signal arm to move from a first position to a second position, and vice versa. The switch can be utilized to control the operating condition of the headlights, namely, low beam or high beam, or other controlled device in the vehicle.

An externally-toothed ratchet wheel (50) is rotatable with the spool (20) in a belt withdrawal direction (22). A first pawl (70) is supported on a housing (12) for pivotal movement about a first axis (72) into engagement with the ratchet wheel (50) to block rotation of the ratchet wheel (50) in the belt withdrawal direction (22). An inertia member (62) supported on the housing (12) is movable in response to vehicle deceleration greater than a predetermined deceleration to pivot the first pawl (70) into engagement with the ratchet wheel (50) and thereby block rotation of the ratchet wheel (50) and the spool (20) in the belt withdrawal direction (22). A second pawl (90) is supported on the housing (12) for pivotal movement relative to the ratchet wheel (50) about a second axis (92) spaced from the first axis (72). The first pawl (70) has a portion for supporting the second pawl (90) and for effecting movement of the second pawl (90) about the second axis (92), upon movement of the first pawl (70) about the first axis (72), into a ready position. The second pawl (90), when in the ready position, is engageable with the ratchet wheel (50) to block rotation of the ratchet wheel (50) and thus of the spool (20) in the belt withdrawal direction (22).

The present invention relates to a multiple function control stalk for a vehicle having a linearly moveable wiper delay rheostat. The control stalk includes a plurality of switches for controlling various devices on the vehicle, such as the windshield wiper and washer controls and vehicle speed or cruise controls. A windshield wiper delay switch is provided on the control stalk which includes a rheostat having an arm which is linearly moveable in a direction generally parallel to the longitudinal axis of the control stalk. The wiper delay rheostat is disposed slightly above the body of the control stalk for easy viewing and manipulation by the vehicle driver. Movement of the arm of the wiper delay rheostat varies the electrical resistance thereof and, consequently, causes an electrical control circuit to alter the period of delay between successive cycles of operation of the windshield wipers.
