摘要: A device and method for delivering an aerosolized liquid having therapeutic properties to a user's lungs. The compact and convenient device includes a housing of such size that it can be held in a user's one hand with an exit opening in the housing for directing the aerosol to the user's mouth. The housing encloses a dispensing system for containing the liquid to be aerosolized and delivering it to an electrohydrodynamic apparatus and an electrohydrodynamic apparatus for aerosolizing the liquid and delivering the aerosol to the exit opening. The electrohydrodynamic apparatus produces a cloud of aerosolized liquid droplets having a monodispersed respirable droplet size and near zero velocity. The aerosolizing apparatus includes a plurality of spray sites each having a tip end, the spray sites cooperating with a charge source to result in an aerosolized spray from at least one tip end, a plurality of discharge electrodes downstream of the tip ends, and a plurality of reference electrodes downstream of the plurality of discharge electrodes.

摘要: A piezoelectric micropump is disclosed for pumping fluid from a container to a delivery point in low volumes and at controlled flow rates. The pumping action is created by movement of two or three diaphragms. The movement of each diaphragm is caused by expansion and contraction of an attached piezoelectric actuator. Coordination of the movement of the diaphragms creates unidirectional flow of the fluid. The piezoelectric actuators are cantilevered between the pump body and the diaphragms to provide greater deflection of the diaphragms. The piezoelectric actuators preferably are piezoelectric bimorphs such that the diaphragms can function as both seals and pumps.

摘要: A method of irradiating a biological specimen with ultraviolet, in particular a polynucleotide specimen selected from DNA or RNA, or optionally a protein. In the case where the specimen is DNA or RNA, or potentially proteins, the specimen is irradiated to cross-link the specimen to a substrate. In the case where the specimen is DNA, the specimen can also be irradiated to form thymine dimers. The method uses an apparatus which permits relatively precise control of the total ultraviolet dose received by the specimen, despite any changes of ultraviolet flux from the lamps which may occur from during any one experiment, or between a number of experiments. Thus, the method allows relatively highly reproducible results to be obtained.

摘要: A pulmonary dosing system and method for supplying to a patient a predetermined amount of respirable therapeutically active material. The system comprises a patient interface to introduce the material into the patient's lungs. The patient interface is connected to a flexible inhalation tube and a flexible exhalation tube. The exhalation tube is connected to a filter having an outlet connected to atmosphere. The inhalation tube is connected to an apparatus for providing pulsed amounts of the material entrained in filtered atmospheric air. A control unit operates the pulmonary dosing system in accordance with operator inputs regarding the number of patent exhales between pulses, and pulse length. The exhaust filter and the apparatus for providing pulsed amounts of the therapeutically active material may be enclosed in a containment case and the patient's interface may comprise a mouth tube-mask combination when the therapeutically active material comprises at least one toxic drug.
