Abstract:
A method for predicting the risk of a pirate attack in a geographical area and for generating a distribution of probabilities of a pirate attack based on intelligence (INTEL) information regarding the pirates and pirate behavior combined with information regarding environmental and meteorological (METOC) conditions and information regarding shipping activity and shipping vulnerabilities. The method can also be used to predict the probability of other activities that are subject to METOC conditions, such as anti-narcotics efforts, undersea warfare operations, mine warfare operations, and human trafficking interdiction.
Abstract:
A synthetic platelet substitute that interacts with platelets and the (sub)endothelium, comprising: (a) a carrier molecule comprising lipidic particles with a cross-linked surface mesh, the lipidic particles comprising: an inner lipidic particle of pharmaceutically acceptable particle-forming lipids; hydrophilic polymer chains linked to the surface of the lipidic particle, the hydrophilic polymer chains comprising a crosslinkable end group at free ends thereof; and cross-linker groups linking the end groups of the hydrophilic polymer chains to form the cross-linked surface mesh; and (b) at least one receptor molecule attached to the surface of the carrier molecule. The receptor molecule can be a peptide moiety specific for ligands involved in platelet function.
Abstract:
Systems and methods are presented herein for generating an X-ray image wherein the X-ray image generator has no electrical connection with an X-ray source which generates the X-rays. The X-ray image generator comprises a screen which converts at least a portion of the X-rays generated by the source into light; a mirror which reflects the light such that a light-measuring device is focused on the screen, a photon detector which triggers the light measuring device when it detects photons related to the generated X-rays, and a computer connected to at least the light-measuring device which processes the output from the light-measuring device into an image displayable on a computer screen.
Abstract:
A sensor device mountable on a threaded valve stem of an inflatable tire of a vehicle having an actuating pin adapted to be depressed by a component of an air gauge or a connecting fixture of a compressed air line, generally consisting of a housing defining a closed chamber, having a first threaded opening permitting such housing to be threaded onto the valve stem, and a second opening; an abutment pin disposed in the housing engageable with the actuating pin of the valve stem for depressing the actuating pin of the valve stem and thereby opening the valve stem when the housing is threaded onto the valve stem, providing an intercommunication of the interiors of the tire and the housing; a valve disposed in the second opening of the housing having an actuating pin adapted to be depressed by the component of an air gauge or connecting fixture of a compressed air line; a sensor mounted in the housing for sensing the pressure in the housing chamber; a microcontroller connected to the pressure sensor for receiving and processing signals therefrom corresponding to sensed pressures; and a transmitter mounted on the housing and coupled to the processor for transmitting processed signals corresponding to sensed pressures.
Abstract:
A mitigation enablement module for a computer that improves application reliability. When performing memory management operations, the mitigation enablement module and associated memory manager selectively use mitigations that are intended to prevent an application bug from cause an application error. The memory manager may selectively apply mitigations for each of one or more applications based on the likelihood that such mitigations are successful at preventing bugs from causing application errors. The likelihood is determined from historical information on whether the mitigations, when applied, prevented bugs from causing memory operations that could cause application errors. This historical information can be gathered on a single computer over multiple invocations of the application or may be aggregated from multiple computers, each invoking the application. The determined likelihood may then be used to determine whether or for how long to apply the mitigation actions for memory operations requested by the application.
Abstract:
It is provided mimotope receptors and inhibitors that employ peptide mimics that mimic the shape and function of natural receptors and ligands, thus providing synthetic binding sites for ligands and receptors. Receptor mimics can be attached to carriers, such as liposomes, to act as synthetic platelets, for example, by providing multiple binding sites for binding to other (natural or synthetic) platelets or to the endothelium. Synthetic platelets would have virtually limitless shelf life and would not require disease screening prior to transfusion, thereby providing a solution to the perpetual platelet shortages, as well as the safety and storage issues associated with natural blood platelets.
Abstract:
Techniques for performing memory management to mitigate memory errors. In accordance with the principles described herein, a memory management module may be implemented that acts in different modes of operation for each of one or more software modules issuing requests for performance of memory operations to the memory management module. In one mode of operation, one or more mitigation actions may be performed by the memory management module in addition to or instead of the memory operation requested by the calling software module, such that the memory operations are performed in accordance with the mitigation actions. These mitigation actions may serve to reduce a likelihood of a memory error negatively affecting the calling software module. In another mode of operation, the memory management module performs memory operations as requested, without performing mitigation actions.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for data transmission at energy efficient rates. An embodiment of an apparatus includes a port for the transfer of data. The port has an active state in which the port may transmit or receive data and an inactive state in which the port does not transmit or receive data. The apparatus further includes logic to control the transfer of data. The logic places the port into the active state for a first time period for the transfer of data and places the port into the inactive state for a second time period. The logic further prevents transfer of data during the inactive state.
