Disclosed is an IC chip using a glass substrate capable of being manufactured at a lower cost than the IC chip using from a semiconductor wafer. Further, where the body substrate of a display device is made of glass, the IC chip and the body substrate can have equal coefficients of thermal expansion, thus preventing the IC chips from peeling off and reducing the failure rate. Furthermore, the gate line driving IC applied to a display device can be arranged as an IC chip having a length approximately equal to the display area, therefore, mounting a plurality of IC chips as the gate driving IC is not required, thereby reducing the production cost. Still further, all gate lines can be extended in parallel from the IC chip so that no difference in the delay occurs among the gate lines and the size of frame of display device can reduced.

Test data terminals R-DATA, G-DATA, and B-DATA are provided with respect to video signal lines VL-R, VL-G, and VL-B, via switches SW-R, SW-G, and SW-B, respectively. The switches SW-R, SW-G, and SW-B are turned ON by receiving an H level input signal supplied from a test terminal SW. Thus, a test of a panel is performed before an external IC is connected to the panel. When the external IC is connected to the panel, on the other hand, these terminals used for the test are fixed to an L level, thereby preventing abnormal operations.

A horizontal clock signal is subjected to switching adjustment in a propagation delay adjustment circuit, which alternatively switches a delay amount of the horizontal clock signal between two levels, and the resulting horizontal clock signal subjected to the switching adjustment is then supplied to a horizontal shift register. The FPC generates a switching signal by branching from either a high potential voltage signal VDD or a low potential voltage signal VSS and supplies the switching signal to the propagation delay adjustment circuit. A phase switching circuit having a function similar to that of the propagation delay adjustment circuit may be provided within the driving IC.

The display device of this invention, in which the retaining circuit for retaining the image signal is provided for each of the pixel elements, is capable of operating under two operation modes, a normal operation mode and a memory mode. Since the placement of the retaining circuit 110, which requires relatively large area, is confined to the area for the pixel element electrode 17 not in between the neighboring pixel element electrodes 17, the required area for one pixel element is minimized, resulting in the size reduction of the liquid crystal display device. By placing at least a portion of the retaining circuit in the area of the pixel element electrode 17 of the neighboring pixel element, the detour of the wiring can be omitted, resulting in the efficient use of the space. By this, the area required for the retaining circuit is minimized, directly resulting in the reduction of the size of the liquid crystal display device.

When a driver section is to be built in, the driver section TFT is the same top gate type as the pixel section TFT, and an active layer is made of the same material as the active layer and has a conductive layer which is made of the same material as the second electrode with the insulating layer held between the active layer and the conductive layer below it. The pixel section can form the storage capacitor while preventing lowering of the aperture ratio. Because conditions for the polycrystalization annealing of the active layer are equal for the pixel section TFT and the driver section TFT, TFTs with the same properties can be obtained.

For example, the various bus lines are formed using the same layer as the layer of the pixel element electrode. The peripheral driving circuit is formed using the layers below the pixel element electrode including the layer of gate electrode, the layer of the data line, the active layer of the TFT, and the light-blocking layer. This increases the flexibility of the disposition of the bus lines, leading to the improved design flexibility. The multiple layer configuration of the display device increases the flexibility of the pattern layout for the peripheral driving circuits.
