摘要:
An optical power monitor comprises a fiber and ferrule assembly telescopically embedded in a first glass tube enclosure and a collimating lens telescopically embedded in a second glass tube enclosure. The two glass tube enclosures are bonded together at their respective facing axial ends. The collimating lens is at a first end substantially adjacent the fiber and ferrule assembly. A second end of the lens is coated with a partially transmissive mirror surface for passing a portion of incident light to a photon detector which is bonded to the second glass tube enclosure.

An interleaver comprises a serial array of optical elements to which a multichannel, continuous spectrum, composite signal is input and two multichannel, non-continuous spectrum, composite signals are output. Two embodiments are disclosed. One such embodiment provides output composite signals which are spectrally symmetric in that each such non-continuous spectrum contains the same number of channels albeit of alternating center wavelengths. The other such embodiment provides output composite signals which are spectrally asymmetric in that each such non-continuous spectrum contains either a different number of channels or an equal number of channels of narrower or wider passband. Each of the preferred embodiments comprises an array of optical elements which split the input composite signal into components of different polarization states, selectively add phase shifts to some of these components and recombine them a number of times. The inventive arrays operate on the incident composite signal light beam to produce interference effects which attenuate the unwanted wavelength components in each composite output signal and reinforce the desired wavelength components.

A new low-cost, highly reliable and compact optical power monitor is manufactured with simplified structure and improved configurations that require only lateral position adjustment for input/output beam alignment. A compact size is achieved by employing prefabricated housing containing a highly effective focus lens placed at fixed position relative to an optical sensor, e.g., a photodiode. The prefabricated housing further function as a seal housing for direct plugging into a holding tube fitting seamlessly to a GRIN lens to focus the tapped collimated beam to the photo sensor thus greatly simplify the manufacturing processes without alignment requirements. Thermal stability and reliable performance is achieved by applying multiple-layered optical reflection-transmission coating directly onto the end surface of a GRIN lens for tapping a small portion of the collimated beam onto the focus lens and the photo sensor. The insertion loss can be conveniently minimized by laterally shifting the relative position of a dual fiber ferrule and the GRIN lens without complicate angular adjustments. A power monitor with compact size, high damage threshold, low manufacture cost and high performance stability is provided for convenient implementation in new and existing optical systems.
