According to the present invention, there is provided a magnetic disk memory system. An embodiment of this system comprises a magnetic disk of a perpendicular recording type, including a soft magnetic backing layer and a magnetic recording layer of a perpendicular magnetic anisotropy formed on the backing layer, and a magnetic head for writing or reading of data with respect to the magnetic disk, wherein the magnetic head comprises (a) a pair of main magnetic poles each of which made of a material having a high magnetic permeability, one end of the each pole being located so as to face the magnetic disk surface, (b) a non-magnetic interlayer provided between two main magnetic poles of the pair, (c) a recording coil disposed so as to generate a magnetic flux passing through the magnetic disk via the main magnetic poles, and (d) an MR element provided via an insulation layer on the other ends of the pair of main magnetic poles, one MR element having a film surface parallel to end surfaces of the other ends of the main magnetic poles, and being magnetically coupled with the pair of main magnetic poles.

A magnetic disk drive for carrying out reading/writing of information to/from a magnetic disk having a plurality of tracks including an innermost circumference track and an outermost circumference track. The disk drive includes a rotary actuator and a magnetic head mounted on a magnetic head slider which has separate writing and reading elements. The elements have a magnetic gap for reading and writing the information on a magnetic disk. A rotary actuator arm has one end connected to a rotary actuator and the other end connected to the magnetic head slider. The head slider has an inflow end and an outflow end for the fluid flow generated by the rotation of the disk and at least one bearing which generates a dynamic pressure by the fluid flow. The head is provided close to the outflow. A skew angle created between the magnetic gap length direction and the rotating direction of the disk is substantially constant between the innermost and the outermost tracks. The bearing is arranged at a given angle with respect to the rotating direction so that the outflow end is located on the outer circumferential side of the magnetic disk from the inflow end.

A slider of a magnetic disk device has a main body and a protecting layer coated on the main body. The protecting layer has first flat surface which faces the magnetic recording surface of the rotatable disk and which extends in a tangential direction of the disk when the slider is located adjacent to the magnetic recording surface of the disk. The contact region of the first surface is in contact with the magnetic recording surface of the rotatable disk. Thus, a frictional force produced between the magnetic recording surface and the first flat surface is reduced, and the damage to the magnetic recording surface can be prevented. According to the present invention, the damage to the magnetic recording surface of the disk can be prevented, and the variation in distance between the magnetic recording surface and the magnetic head can be remarkably reduced. As a result, the recording density of data recorded on the magnetic disk can be increased.

In a magnetic disk apparatus according to the present invention, a slider has a sliding surface and a reflecting surface. The height of the reflecting surface from the magnetic disk is greater than that of the sliding surface from the disk, when the slider flies above the disk, so that there exists a minute difference in level between the sliding surface and the reflecting surface. The flying height of the sliding surface of the slider from the magnetic disk is measured. When the magnetic disk is rotated, the slider flies from the disk. In this state, a reference flying height, i.e., the flying height of the reflecting surface from the magnetic disk is measured by the optical interference process. Then, the minute difference is substracted from the measured reference flying height to obtain the flying height of the sliding surface of the slider from the magnetic disk. According to the invention, even if the minimum flying height of the sliding surface of the slider is shorter than 0.1 micrometer, the measurement can be effected by the optical interference process. In general, moreover, a minute flying height between a fixed datum plane and an object flying above the datum plane can be measured accurately.

This invention relates to reduction in frictional torque of a harmonic drive type transmission apparatus having a circular spline, a flexspline, and a wave generator. A wave generator bearing of the wave generator has a retainer for holding a number of balls which roll between the inner and outer races to be in contact with an inner race and an outer race and to be separated from each other in the circumferential direction. The ball retainer has a number of radial pockets for storing the balls. Each pocket is formed into a shape forming a narrow (in the circumferential direction) opening portion at the inner race side and a wide (in the circumferential direction) opening portion at the outer race side. The balls are in contact with the opening portion at the inner race side in the pockets at the minor axis positions of a drive cam, and the balls are in contact with substantially the central portion of the pocket inner surface at the major axis positions of the cam.
