Novel phenanthrene derivatives represented by the general formula (1), ##STR1## wherein the group of the formula ##STR2## is a group of the formula ##STR3## (wherein R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group), a group of the formula ##STR4## (wherein R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkanoyl group) or a group of the formula ##STR5## (wherein R.sup.2 is the same as defined above), and salts thereof, and other compounds derived therefrom and salts thereof; processes for preparing the same; and interleukin-1 (IL-1) inhibitors containing the abovementioned novel phenanthrene derivatives as to the active ingredient(s).

This invention provides a nitric oxide synthesis inhibitor composition comprising, as an active ingredient, at least one member of the group consisting of various phenanthrene derivatives, typically represented by the following general formula (1), and salts thereof. ##STR1## The nitric oxide synthesis inhibitor composition of this invention is useful for the prophylaxis and therapy of nitric oxide-associated diseases such as endotoxin shock.

A method for the prophylaxis and treatment of diseases induced by accelerated INF-.alpha. secretion, such as rheumatoid arthritis, endotoxin shock, adult respiratory distress syndrome, thermal burn, asthma, myocardial infarction, acute phase of viral myocardiosis, etc. which comprises administering a carbostyril compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is H or lower alkyl, and R.sup.2 is phenyl(lower)alkyl having optionally 1 to 3 lower alkoxy substituents on the phenyl ring, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof to a subject.
