摘要:
An apparatus and method for monitoring conditions of living beings. A telemetry device includes a monitor which monitors at least one physiological condition of a patient. A transmitter transmits data including information on the condition and information identifying the device or patient. A separate receiver is provided for each device to receive the data transmitted. The receiver outputs signals to a processor. The processor extracts the information on the physiological condition and the information identifying the telemetry device. The processor outputs the information in a digital form to a display unit. The display unit displays the information on the physiological condition and the identifying information in a readable form. There is a separate display area for each telemetry device, whereby a plurality of patients can be monitored simultaneously on a real time or a near real time basis.

A non-invasive apparatus and method for monitoring the blood pressure of a subject detects a pulse signal at both a first and second location on the subject's body. The elapsed time between the arrival of corresponding points of the pulse signal at the first and second locations is determined. Blood pressure is related to the elapsed time by relationships such as: P=a+b ln(T) where a and b are constants dependent upon the nature of the subject and the signal detecting devices. The system can be calibrated by measuring a single pair of reference blood pressure and corresponding elapsed time.

A biological electrode array connects electrical apparatuses to the skin surface of a living body. The array includes an insulating mount having a central area. A case is connected to the mount and has a cavity with conductive shielding extending thereabout. A plurality of shielding electrodes extend from the insulating mount and are spaced-apart about the central area. The shielding electrodes are electrically connected to the shielding of the case. A plurality of spaced-apart brush-tip electrodes extend from the central area of the mount. Signal buffers within the cavity of the case are electrically connected to the brush-tip electrodes. Conductors extend from the cavity, each conductor being electrically connected to one of the buffers. The brush-tip electrodes have thin, but resilient wires, typically of hard stainless steel or tungsten.

An electrode is used the connecting apparatuses to the skin surface of a living body. It includes a tube having an end and a plurality of hard, resilient wires extending outwardly from the end of the tube. The wires have splayed ends in a brush-tip-like arrangement having an end formed by the spaced-apart wires which is multi-pointed and abrasive.

A method and apparatus for monitoring electrical signals propagated through a living organism. A bipolar electrode is placed in contact with the tissue of the organism. Means is operatively connected to the electrode for performing a Hilbert transform on signals from the electrode. The individual electrodes of the bipolar electrode are preferably spaced-apart a distance d so as to satisfy the equation: .vertline..pi.Bd/v.vertline.

Apparatus and a calibration method for measurement of blood pressure are used to determine personal PIP's for a given subject and to store the personal PIP's for future personal use in blood pressure measurement in the subject. The apparatus comprises at least one button communicating with a MPU unit for entering information used to determine the personal PIP's of the subject. The method comprises the steps of obtaining information required to determining the PIP's of a subject, determining the personal PIP's of the subject, and storing the personal PIP's of the subject for future personal use for the subject.

This invention discloses a method for automatic error detection in pressure measurement and an electronic sphygmomanometer using the method. The electronic sphygmomanometer comprises two pressure sensing circuits connected to a MPU. The first pressure sensing circuit is normally-on in pressure measurement. The second pressure sensing circuit is normally-off in pressure measurement. Said normally-off pressure sensing circuit is periodically turned on in an automatic manner to measure the same pressure as the normally-on pressure sensing circuit is used to measure. Said MPU computes the difference between the pressures obtained from the two pressure sensing circuits. When the difference is greater than a given error limit, calibration error warning will be given.

Apparatus for monitoring one or more vital signs of a subject has a number of sensors. There is at least one redundant sensor. Each sensor originates a signal. A selection system determines performance criteria for a number of groups of signals. Each group includes one or more signals. The apparatus computes a predicted value for a vital sign by either computing a value from each group of signals and taking a weighted average with weights based upon the performance criterion or by selecting one of the groups of signals for which the performance criterion is best and computing the output value from that group of signals. The output values are relatively insensitive to artifacts and to errors caused by the disconnection or malfunctioning of one sensor.

A sphygmomanometer having an elongated tube, an air chamber coupled to a first end of the tube, and a liquid chamber coupled to a second end of the tube. The liquid chamber is partially filled with fluid and is couplable to a source of external pressure. An offset region located proximate the second end of the tube has a significantly reduced cross-sectional area so as to reduce the effect of fluid level changes on pressure measurement accuracy. At least one ventilation valve is coupled to the elongated tube and the air chamber and is operative to vent the elongated tube and the air chamber to atmosphere.
