In a steering control system for controlling torque steer in a vehicle equipped with an electric power steering device and a torque split arrangement for individually controlling traction and/or braking force of right and left wheels, a difference in traction and/or braking force between the right and left wheels which may be produced by the torque split arrangement may give rise to torque steer depending on the geometry of the wheel suspension system of the vehicle. The control unit for the electric power steering device additionally receives an additional signal for providing an additional steering torque which is required for canceling the torque steer. Thus, the torque steer can be eliminated both economically and reliably without requiring to modify the wheel suspension system.

A drive force control method for a four-wheel drive vehicle including a torque distributing mechanism capable of changing a drive force distribution ratio between front and rear wheels and a drive force distribution ratio between right and left front wheels or between right and left rear wheels. This method includes the steps of increasing the drive force distribution ratio of the rear wheels to the front wheels according to an increase in absolute value of a lateral G signal, and increasing the drive force distribution ratio of a turning outer wheel as one of the right and left front wheels or one of the right and left rear wheels to a turning inner wheel as the other. A lateral G sensor signal is corrected by an estimated lateral G signal calculated according to a steering angle and a vehicle speed to obtain a control lateral G signal, which is used as the lateral G signal.

Provided are a method and system for computing a vehicle body slip angle in the vehicle movement control so as to allow the vehicle movement to be controlled with an adequate response and stability for practical purposes even without directly detecting or accurately estimating the frictional coefficient between the road surface and the tire. A tire slip angle is computed from a yaw rate, a vehicle speed, a vehicle body slip angle and a road wheel steering angle; a cornering force is computed from a dynamic model of the tire by taking into account at least the tire slip angle; and a hypothetical vehicle body slip angle is computed from the cornering force, the vehicle speed and the yaw rate; the tire slip angle being computed by feeding back the hypothetical vehicle body slip angle in a recursive manner.

A driving force distributing device is provided for distributing a driving force of an engine to the left and right wheels of a vehicle by bringing a pair of hydraulic clutches into and out of their engaged states. The distributing device includes a hydraulic pump mounted within a casing thereof and driven through gears by a half shaft connected to one of the wheels. An oil passage interconnects the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic clutches, the oil passage being defined in a casing. A valve block is coupled to an upper surface of the casing. Thus, the oil passages interconnecting the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic clutches of the driving force distributing device can be compactly formed.

Among pairs of planetary carriers, ring gears and sun gears in these planetary gear mechanisms, one of the pairs are coupled to two output elements of a differential; another pair are relatively non-rotatably connected to each other, and one of the components of the remaining pair is fixed, while the other is connected to a driving source. The control means for calculating a slip ratio (S) of the second wheel to a road on which the motor vehicle is running based on the rotational speeds of the first and second wheels, calculating a ratio (Tr/S) between the torque (Tr) and the slip ratio (S), determining a distribution ratio between the drive forces to be distributed to the first and second wheels based on the ratio between the torque and the slip ratio, and controlling the drive force distributing means to distribute and transmit the drive forces to the first and second wheels according to the distribution ratio.

A wheeled vehicle is equipped with a feedforward steering control system which steers the vehicle through front or rear road wheels in accordance with a driver's steering input such as an angular displacement of a steering wheel, and a negative feedback system which senses a turning behavior of the vehicle such as a yaw rate or a lateral acceleration, and steers the vehicle through the front or rear wheels in such a negative direction as to reduce the turning behavior. The feedforward system may control the angular direction of the front or rear wheels in accordance with a linear combination of the steering input and the time derivative of the steering input, or may control the angular directions of both of the front and rear wheels in accordance with different transfer functions between the steering input and the front and rear wheel angles. The negative feedback system is combined with the feedforward system in various ways to provide desired characteristics of the turning behavior. The negative feedback quantity determined by the negative feedback system may be proportional to the sensed turning behavior, or may be determined in accordance with the difference between the sensed turning behavior, and the reference turning behavior calculated from the vehicle speed and steering input.

A vehicle is equipped with a rear wheel control device including hydraulic actuators for controllably turning rear wheels under influence of hydraulic fluid supplied thereto from a hydraulic pump. Turning the rear wheels is made in one of first and second directions which are opposite to each other, in response to steering effort applied to a steering wheel. The change-over operation of the rear wheel turning between the first and second directions takes place upon substantially stopping supply of the hydraulic fluid to the actuators, thereby preventing shock during the turning direction change-over operation.
