Abstract: A composition and method of using the same for treating human skin of all races for a wide variety of skin ailments, including acne, blemishing, aging, sun damage and cancerous lesions, and other problems associated with skin disorders. The method comprises applying to a region of damaged skin a composition of trichloroacetic acid, a surfactant having cell growth stimulatory properties, and an emulsifier. The ratio of the various ingredients can be varied to effect optimal treatment for a particular type of skin. For treatment of certain disorders, the effect of the composition is enhanced if the skin is irradiated with a suitable light source. The latter stimulates even skin regeneration.Several days after treatment, the damaged area peels off, and a new layer of vibrant, evenly colored, healthy skin is apparent. The procedure can be repeated without adverse effects, although generally a single application is sufficient.

Abstract: A dermatological treatment and composition therefor are described for periodic and effective maintenance of a skin peel patient's subsequent skin condition. The treatment does not use radiation, can be performed quickly, is readily controlled by visual observation of the applied composition, and is self-limiting. The method includes forming a composition having a visualizing agent, a surfactant and an acid or acid equivalent dispersed in a carrier liquid, the concentration of the last not exceeding 30%; applying the composition to a predetermined area of the patient's skin in a quantity effective to result in a predetermined degree of mild exfoliation of the skin; determining degree of coverage of the area of skin by visual observation of extent of the visualizing agent; and maintaining the composition in contact with the area of skin for a period of time effective to result in the predetermined degree of exfoliation of the skin. Composition of this type are also disclosed. Preferable the acid or acid equivalent will be trichloroacetic acid and the surfactant will be a saponin or complex of saponins, preferably steroid saponins. The concentrations of the three principal ingredients, the amount of the composition used and the length of time of the application and treatment will vary according to the specific depth of peel or degree of maintenance which the dermatologist believes appropriate for a particular patient.

Abstract: A scalpel is disclosed for the accurate and rapid formation of flaps or thin sections of skin during many types of surgical procedures (such as excision or reconstruction) in which it is necessary for the surgeon to make an oblique extended cut into the patient's skin and lift an elongated flap of the outer layers of the skin to obtain access to deeper layers of tissue, muscle or bone below. The scalpel has an elongated handle having two opposite ends; a cutting blade extending laterally from one of the ends; and a depth-of-cut limiting plate extending laterally from the same end and disposed parallel to and spaced apart from the cutting blade. The limiting plate has an aperture therein through which the surgeon can view the cutting blade during use. The scalpel thus limits the maximum thickness of tissue that can be cut with the cutting blade. The blade and limiting plate are mounted substantially at a right angle to the axis of the scalpel are angled upwardly or downwardly, preferably upwardly, and can be adhered to the surface of the handle in any suitable manner. The blade and apertured plate are normally spaced apart by a dimension on the order of about 0.02"-0.06" (0.5-1.5 mm). It is contemplated that there may be sets of scalpels with a range of spacing intervals scaled in suitable increments.

Abstract: A combination applicator/massager device is described for simultaneous application of a fluid to an area of a person's skin and massage of that area of skin. The device contains a reservoir for containment and dispensing of the fluid, the reservoir forming a hollow chamber open at one end; a ball retainer having ball-seating recesses therein; a dispensing or metering plate fitting within and substantially closing the open end of the reservoir, with fluid conduits in the plate permitting liquid communication between each recess and the chamber; a spherical ball seated in and freely rotatable within each the recess; and cooperating securing threads or the like to removably secure the retaining means to the reservoir with the plate disposed therebetween and with each ball retained for free rotation in its recess; whereby fluid contained in the reservoir can flow through the conduits into the recesses and onto the surface of the balls and by rotation of the balls the fluid will be transferred to the person's skin when the ball is brought into massaging contact with the person's skin. The balls preferable have textured surfaces for improved liquid retention. Interchangeable balls, retainers and plates can be used to provide optimum dispensing of liquids of different compositions and viscosities.
