Abstract: The present invention comprises methods and apparatus for inspecting a tread. Such methods include providing a tread having a top side and a bottom side, one of the top and bottom sides including a tread feature extending into the thickness of the tread. Such methods further include bending mechanically a transverse extent of the tread relative the tread thickness along a portion of the tread to be inspected about a bending member to form a bent portion of the tread, the portion of the tread to be inspected including the tread feature such that the step of bending expands the tread feature to further expose a depth of the tread feature within the thickness of the tread for inspection. Such further methods include constraining the tread on opposing sides of the portion of the tread to be inspected to maintain the bent portion of the tread in a bent arrangement.

Abstract: Particular embodiments of the present invention include a multi-stage tire tread having two or more wear layers comprising an outer wear layer and one or more inner wear layers arranged within the thickness of the tread below the outer wear layer and one or more outer grooves are arranged within the outer wear layer. The tread further includes a volumetric void ratio equal to approximately 0.25 to 0.40 in the unworn condition and approximately 0.25 to 0.40 in a worn condition where the outer, ground-engaging side is arranged along one of the inner wear layers in the worn condition, the tread further having a contact surface ratio equal to approximately 0.66-0.72 in the unworn condition and approximately 0.56-0.66 in the worn condition.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus for demolding a polymeric material from a mold are disclosed, the methods comprising the steps of placing a material within a mold, closing the mold, molding the material located within the mold, and opening the mold. The mold includes a demolding tool having a material-engaging portion that is in fluid communication with the mold portion, the demolding tool being reversibly disengagable from the first mold member. The demolding tool is disengagable from a resting position within the first mold member to translate from the first mold member the molded polymeric material associated with the material-engaging portion, thereby separating a portion of the molded polymeric material from the mold cavity. In particular embodiments, the material-engaging portion is a cavity. In other embodiments, the material-engaging portion is associated with one or more longitudinal members extending across a portion of the first mold member.

Abstract: The invention includes a tire tread having one or more lateral discontinuities (26), each discontinuity extending into the tread thickness along a non-linear path. The lateral discontinuity extends from a first terminal end (40) to a second terminal end (42), the first terminal end being located closest to an outer, ground-engaging side relative to the second terminal end. The non-linear path can be described as extending from a first portion (A1, A2, A3), to an intermediate portion (B1), and then to a third portion (C1) when extending towards the second terminal end. The first portion has a low average inclination angle, the intermediate portion has a negative average inclination angle, and the third portion has a positive average inclination angle, each angle being measured relative to the depthwise direction of the tread. A positive angle is angled in the direction of intended tire rotation (R) as the tread thickness extends outward towards the outer, ground-engaging side.

Abstract: Embodiments include a tire tread having a plurality of tread elements and a plurality of lateral discontinuities arranged along the tread width and tread length, each of the plurality of tread elements being spaced apart by one of the plurality of lateral discontinuities. The tread width is divided into a plurality of regions, the plurality of regions including: (1) a pair of outermost regions, each outermost region being arranged closest to one of the pair of opposing lateral sides of the tread, and (2) at least one centermost region is arranged closest to the longitudinal centerline of the tread. Each of the lateral discontinuities have a thickness, where the thickness of one or more of the lateral discontinuities arranged in each of the outermost regions is smaller than the thickness of one or more of the lateral discontinuities arranged in the centermost region.

Abstract: The present invention includes methods and apparatus for controlling the abrasion of a tire surface. Particular embodiments provide an abrading tool for abrading a surface of a tire, the tool comprising means for rotating an abrading wheel, an abrading wheel rotatably attached to the means for rotating, and a depth guide secured to the means for rotating, wherein the depth guide includes a pair of freely rotatable, spaced apart guide wheels. Further embodiments include a depth guide configured for use with an abrading tool which includes a abrading wheel and a means for rotating the abrading wheel, the depth guide comprising a mounting member securable to the means for rotating and a pair of freely rotatable, spaced apart guide wheels rotatably attached to the mounting member. Particular embodiments further include a method for preparing a portion of a tire for repair.
