A surface protection system comprising a protective sleeve positionable over an orthopedic tool or implant, for example the tapered end of an orthopedioc femoral stem implant to shield the covered surface from exposure to abrasive particles during an automated polishing process is described. The protective sleeve comprises a body having an annular sidewall that extends from a proximal end to a distal end and is composed of a polymeric material. A cavity resides within the body extending through the distal end to a proximal end sidewall positioned perpendicular to the annular sidewall. The protective sleeve further comprises at least one annular recess intermediate at least two annular ridges that reside along an interior surface at the distal end of the sleeve. These series of annular ridges and recesses form a removably tight seal around the exterior surface that minimizes the migration of abrasive polishing particles to the exterior surface of the orthopedic tool or implant. The system further comprises an impactor and extractor tools which facilitate the positioning and removal of the protective sleeve from the surface thereof.

The inserter consists of a drive train, a C-shaped housing, and a prosthetic cup engaging subassembly. The subassembly comprises an impaction plate, a grasping plate and a domed nose. When activated by the drive train, a plurality of hook ends extending from the grasping plate latch onto the cup of the prosthetic to hold and manipulate the prosthetic cup during implantation.

An improved insert for assembly with a bone plate is described. The insert has a first opening adapted to receive a set screw and a second opening adapted to receive a bone screw. The insert is connectable to the bone plate using a set screw. The insert in conjunction with the set screw provides an improved range of relative motion for placing the bone screw at outboard locations with respect to the bone plate. That way, bone fragments that are not necessarily reachable using the bone plate without the insert can be secured together for improved healing.

The rim (20) has an edge (22) visible to the user that indicates the position of the tool (10) relative to the bone. A first plurality of cutting sites (24) is arrayed along the body (12) and a second plurality of cutting sites (28) is arrayed circumferentially along the edge (22). Preferably, the first plurality of cutting sites (24) present raised first teeth (30, 130, 230, 330) having a profile selected from continuous squared (30), continuous rounded (130), discontinuous squared (230) and tongued (330) profiles. The tool handle comprises a housing providing a linkage chamber extending from a proximal housing grip end to a distal housing tool end for receiving a surgical tool. A tool linkage is partially housed within the housing linkage chamber comprising an axial handle region extending along axis A-A and a radiused housing region curving about a focal point. That way, a locking pawl of the tool linkage changes planes from its proximal end to a distal extending hook end. This provides a relatively short connection to a surgical tool that is optimum in the tight space requirements of a minimally invasive hip surgery.

The inserter includes an inserter head (20), a housing (12) and a locking mechanism. The housing (12) is attached to the inserter head, the housing enclosing a drive train (14) having, at a far end (134), a prosthesis engaging thread (124), and at the opposite end (42′), a handle (20) which facilitates turning of the drive train by the operator. The locking mechanism is associated with the housing which selectively locks the drive train, and thus the prosthesis, in position. The opposite end (42′) of the drive train has a latch device which enables quick removal from the housing for cleaning and sterilization.

A reamer system is provided which includes a cannulated reamer handle, and a corresponding cannulated reamer, which, when assembled and operated over a drill pin secured in a manner axially aligned with the stem of the femoral joint, enables the accurate and controlled reshaping of the femoral joint. The reamer is made up of a cutting form and a central guide, in which the guide is supported at the center of the cutting form by a bar structure. The bar structure includes portions which connect to and extend radially between the central guide and a peripheral edge of the cutting form. Optionally, the central guide includes a surface offset from a plane of the bar structure to a degree which enables that surface to contact an associated surface referenced to the bone, in order to prevent the cutting form from plunging so far over the bone as to potentially damage the femoral stem. This offset surface is preferably polished to reduce friction during relative rotational movement between this surface and the surface referenced to the bone. The offset surface is an axially perpendicular surface of a boss through which the drill pin is guided.

Disclosed is a patellar cutting jig for use in a knee joint surgical procedure. The jig grips and holds a patella in situ in spatial reference to the femur to enable the appropriate cut to be made to the patella to accurately accommodate the patello-femoral gap at the replacement knee joint. The patella jig has a referencing component that provides a landmark connection between the patella jig and the femur which enables the patella clamp of the jig to be oriented relative to the reference feature prior to gripping the patella. Thus a patella held in the clamp is fixed in the cutting jig an appropriate orientation relative to the femur prior to its resection. Cutting the patella while it is referenced to the patellar groove on the femur increases the accuracy of the resection.
