An improved lens with Rugate filter specifically designed to be worn in prescription and non-prescription glasses, contact lenses, intraocular lenses and sunglasses, and to provide protection against macular degeneration by reducing harmful visible blue light transmission and ocular photochemical damage. The lens at least includes a single lens layer with a Rugate filter deposited thereon to selectively block visible blue light. Other layers may be added including a polarizing layer, dielectric layer and/or color tint in a lens sandwich configuration, to additionally give a high degree of UVA and UVB protection, color contrast, and glare reduction. The Rugate filter is a stop band which yields an exceptional light transmission profile under all light conditions, thereby maximizing protection as well as clarity of vision. In the multi-layer embodiment, all of the lens layers provide comprehensive protection for preventing macular degeneration, cataracts and other ocular injuries, yet maintain a balanced light transmission profile for visual acuity.

The corneal inlay can also include a pinhole effect to increase depth of focus. The film may selectively inhibit blue light within the wavelength range of 400 nm to 460 nm to reduce phototoxic light to the eye while maintaining photopic vision, and may be color balanced to allow for the system into which the film is incorporated to be perceived as colorless to a viewer observing and/or using the system. The system may have a photopic and scotopic luminous transmission of 85% or more and a phototoxicity ratio of less than 80%. When used in an ophthalmic system or other system disposed between an observer's eye and a light source, the film may reduce the flux of blue light to the internal structures of the eye while reducing or minimizing dilation of the pupil.

The present disclosure provides metalloporphyrin and metallochlorin compounds (e.g., compounds of Formula (II) and (III)), which are useful in the preparation of optical devices (e.g., contact lenses, intraocular lenses, implantable contact lenses) that protect retinal pigment epithelium by the selective blocking of blue light. Also provided are precursor porphyrin and chlorin compounds (e.g., compounds of Formula (I)), and compositions and optical devices incorporating the compounds of the disclosure. Also provided are methods of selecting appropriate metalloporphyrin and metallochlorin compounds for incorporation into optical devices wherein the devices mitigate damage to retinal epithelial cells while balancing changes to luminous transmission, discomfort glare, color distortion, and disruption of circadian rhythms.

The transmission spectrum of the system has a first local minimum in transmission between 400 nm-470 nm.
