摘要： A smoking article is provided and has opposed lighting and mouth ends. A mouth end portion is disposed at the mouth end and a heat generation portion is disposed about the lighting end. An outer wrapping material is wrapped at least about the heat generation portion and extends toward the mouth end portion, to define a cylindrical rod. An aerosol-generating portion is disposed within the outer wrapping material and between the heat generation and mouth end portions. The aerosol-generating portion is configured to generate an aerosol in response to heat received from the heat generation portion. Heat from the heat generation portion for aerosol formation is provided by igniting a combustible fuel element (e.g., a plurality of parts or pieces of clean burning carbonaceous material) located within an enclosed heat generation cartridge.

摘要： Apparatus for defoliating vertically limited sections of tobacco plants, including a harvester vehicle capable of straddling two rows of tobacco plants and a defoliator means mounted on the vehicle to engage the stalks of one of the two straddled rows and strip the leaves therefrom. The defoliator means comprises a pair of defoliators, each including flexible rotating helical webs having scalloped edges. A leaf removal means or lateral conveyor is provided under each defoliator, in the form of a wire chain conveyor for conveying the leaves to a longitudinal conveyor, running lengthwise of the harvester, for conveying the leaves to a collecting receptacle.

摘要： This improved apparatus and process for manufacturing jet impingement type filters for smoking articles utilizes a normally substantially air impervious sheet material having a plurality of preformed smoke passing perforations therein and a rod of smoke pervious filter material. A tab of the perforated sheet material is positioned over the end of the rod of filter material by securing a peripheral portion of the perforated tab to the longitudinal surface of the filter rod adjacent an end whereby a major portion of the tab extends beyond the end and folding the major portion transverse the axis of the filter rod with peripheral areas extending radially outwardly from the longitudinal surface. These peripheral portions are further folded or draped over the longitudinal surface of the filter rod and secured thereto so as to form a cup-like enclosure or cap over the end. The preferred apparatus for assembling the filter comprises a female die, means for successively tabbing filter rods with the perforated sheet material and aligning the tabbed filter rods adjacent the opening in the female die with the tabs folded therebetween and means for effecting relative reciprocal movement whereby the female die cups or caps the tabs over the ends of successive filter rods. The resulting cupped-tab filter plugs are then disposed in gaseous communication with a smokable material such as a cigarette rod by, for example, an overwrap of conventional tipping paper.

摘要： Device for rapidly weighing small, light weight objects comprising a vertical annular member having a duct open at its upper end and having a movable cylindrical member located therein. Air supply means are provided for feeding air to the bottom of the chamber to raise the cylindrical member. An escape slot is positioned in the wall of the chamber to allow for the escape of air therethrough when the bottom of the cylindrical member rises above the lowermost portion of the slot. Means are connected to the air supply means (e.g., a gauge) for determining the difference in pressure therein when an object to be weighed is placed on top of the cylindrical member and depresses the same to reduce the effective area of the slot. The device is especially suitable for weighing very light objects, such as cigarettes.
