A multi-stage loop reactor, employed in various gas-liquid or gas-liquid-solid chemical reaction systems, which comprises a reactor body, draft tube(s) inside the reactor body, and a gas distributor at the bottom of draft tube. The draft tube can include one or more sections. The multi-stage loop reactor of the present invention has a higher mass transfer rate because the different phases are well mixed throughout the reactor, and the gas bubbles are distributed evenly everywhere. The reactor of this invention can be extensively applied in various gas-liquid or gas-liquid-solid reaction processes including the oxidization process, hydrogenation process, hydrocracking process, coal liquification process, fermentation process, hydrocarbon processing process, and biological treatment of waste water, etc.

Apparatus for air mixing to prevent acid stratification in a battery having a liquid electrolyte is disclosed. A source of pressurized gas is connected to a gas conduit mounted on the battery. Downtubes within each cell of the battery are in fluid communication with the gas conduit. The tubes have outlets positioned near the bottom of each cell and one-way valves which allow gas to flow into the cells but prevent liquid electrolyte from flowing out of the cell through the downtube. The invention also includes a method of mixing a liquid electrolyte including using a one-way valve to allow a mixing gas to flow into a cell but prevent liquid electrolyte from escaping from the cell.

A gas and liquid contacting apparatus, illuminated, with circulation, and a method, are disclosed. To remove a trace component from a mixture of gases, for example to remove carbon dioxide from air, the inefficiency of attempting to dissolve all of the gas mixture followed by desorption of the non target components is overcome by injecting small bubbles (5) into a liquid filled chamber (1) which is inclined at an angle and has an abrupt change in cross section (2) & (3). The target component diffuses out of the small bubbles. The small bubbles, substantially relieved of the target component, are collected in a gas trap (4) created by the inclination and dimension change of the chamber. Large bubbles (8) escaping from the gas trap via an upper riser (9) to a reservoir (10) assist with the circulation of the contents of the system. A return tube (11) connecting the reservoir to the bottom end of the chamber completes the circuit. A low pressure low energy smooth circulation system is described suitable for removing a greater quantity of a target component than is created by the energy inputs. Parts of the system are made of material transparent to required energy sources. Variations are disclosed.

An apparatus is provided for causing circulation within a large body of fluid, especially a fluid comprising long molecules, such as polymer chains. The apparatus comprises a so-called "large bubble" generator, which generates a gas bubble to push the liquid through a series of bent pipes and ultimately into a vertically extending stackpipe. Upon generating a large gas bubble into the stackpipe, the gas acts as a piston within the stackpipe, pushing liquid upwardly therethrough, and thereby drawing liquid into the bottom. In order to prevent "motoring", a sharp-edged baffle plate is provided at a bend in the pipes between the gas-accumulator and the stackpipe. The baffle plate serves to prevent continuing flow of the fluid created by the presence of the long chain molecules.
